To me in the Machida/Shogun fight, they were for the most part looking to counter, and honestly, that's how Machida and Anderson usually fight. Both primarily counter-strike unless/until their opponents prove to be markedly slower, then they explode.
They are both great strikers- Spider comes from more angles, Machida punches straighter and uses more leg kicks, but neither rarely (if ever) let it all hang out.
Conclusion: Styles makes fights. I would submit that, unless both of the fighters for some reason choose to adopt a non-counterpunching strategy, this could potentially be one of the most boring, technical bouts in recent memory- even more boring than the Shogun fight, which was a snoozer to me.
Good thing this match will never happen...
