BJ takes a BJJ match with George 10 out of 10 times. BJ Penngot his nickname because of his BJJ, he is legitimately one of the very best in the entire world at BJJ, he wins this on any given day guaranteed.

Wow... This is considered a dream match? George has the best guard passing you've ever seen? anyways, I voted Penn.

That doesn't mean he's an elite striker. He uses his strikes to set up his takedowns. Perfect example was his throw on Hughes. Never in a million years could he have pulled off such a fundamentally incorrect throw on Hughes in a wrestling match. Hughes put his hand up to block a phantom punch, and was thrown.
GSP while his striking may not be elite, does have an ability most fighter just can't seem to grasp. He'll hit you from any position. This causes fighters to always be aware , and defend his strikes.
Lets forget the oilgate for a second. In my mind, he passed BJ's guard not because of his superior grapping, but because he was battering BJ from the top. GSP is not passing BJ's guard in a straight grappling match.
No where did I say GSP was an elite striker, nor do I believe he is an elite grappler. When it's all put together, he's an elite fighter.
By the way, i'm no GSP fan, i've just come to except how good he is as a fighter, but lets not pretend he's now a BJJ master.

is this a joke? somewhere, bj's bjj got lost in translation here. maybe it's because of his outstanding striking. maybe it's because of the gracie hatetrain. maybe it's because people were deluded enough to believe florian when he said he could tap penn in one round.
if penn wanted to groundfight and win all of his matches, he could. he just chooses to mentally shatter his opponents into such a state that they're actually trying to take a bjj world champion down. that's some jedi shit. his ground work against stevenson and florian looked like it was phoned in, and he never relinquished a bit of control. george has a lot of promise, but he's got a ways to go before 'killing the master'
slow things down people!

I know BJ is hailed as a great BJJ fighter and he definately is but what I've seen from George Sotiropoulos of late and how SLICK and CRAFTY he is with HIS BJJ I just have to give it to George. Again, this is from what I've seen, who really knows what would happen if they go at it on mats and not in the Octogon.
