Jorge Gurgel vs. Doug Evans at UFC 77 — Exclusive
Posted by UFC Junkie on August 9, 2007 at 9:31 am ET

Jorge GurgelJorge Gurgel (11-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC), a cast member from “The Ultimate Fighter 2” who runs a mixed-martial-arts training center just north of Cincinnati, has been booked for the UFC 77 card and will take on Alaska Fighting Championships bantamweight champion Doug Evans (6-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC). ( learned of the fight from Gurgel’s management overnight.

UFC 77 takes place Oct. 20 at U.S. Bank Arena in downtown Cincinnati. Gurgel’s training partner, Rich Franklin, takes on current UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva in the night’s main event.

The fact that Gurgel was able to get cleared for the fight is nothing short of remarkable. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt defeated Diego Saraiva via unanimous decision at UFC 73, but Gurgel suffered a broken jaw and a facial fracture in the victory. The California State Athletic Commission issued an indefinite medical suspension after the fight and required Gurgel to get a doctor’s clearance to fight again.

Prior to the victory over Saraiva, Gurgel dropped a unanimous decision to Mark Hominick at UFC Fight Night 5. He rebounded three months later for a unanimous-decision victory over Danny Abbadi at UFC 63.

He’ll now take on Evans, a UPS sorter up in Anchorage, Alaska. Dismissed as a “gimme” for Sports Illustrated poster boy Roger Huerta for their bout at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale, Evans came out and gave the UFC’s prized lightweight a tough test. After getting the best of the first round, the UFC newcomer inadvertently gave up his back and suffered a TKO from strikes in the second.

Still, fans and UFC officials alike were impressed by the 26-year-old’s moxy, and he’ll now look for his first UFC win in Cincinnati.
