    The Return Of......

It wasn't looking good over here in the UK, until a couple of days ago at least.
Sky and Virgin Media are the two biggest providers, and when BT Sports was announced, it was picked up immediately by Sky, but would not be available on Virgin Media at all, and they had 'no plans for it to it available any time soon' either.

As a Vigin customer I was pretty annoyed to say the least, until I turned on my TV the other day and Bam! A big message appears telling me that BT Sport 1 and 2 are now available at no extra cost. Result!

    Bring on the fights!

Fox Sports 1 reaches crucial carriage deals before launch

Fox Sports 1 reached carriage deals today with DirecTV, The Dish Network and Time Warner Cable, according to a report today by the Los Angeles Times.

The new station, which debuts on Saturday with more than six hours of UFC programming, including a live event from Boston's TD Garden headlined by Chael Sonnen vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua. The UFC takes up all of the new station's first night prime time with 10 live fights airing from 6-11 p.m.

Until these deals were agreed to, the launch of the station was in danger of having very limited availability.

No terms were announced for the three deals, but it will boost the station's availability from about 45 million homes to 85 million homes, out of the approximately 99 million cable and dish households. There are more than 114 million U.S. television households.

The sides had been reported at an impasse in recent days. SNL Kagan, a television industry consulting firm reported that the station, in its current identity as The Speed Channel, was getting about 23 cents per subscriber per month from cable systems and satellite companies on average. FOX was looking to up that to 80 cents per subscriber with the new station. Major distributors had balked at the price increase.

The negotiations are part of a much larger television story having to do with the sports world. With stations greatly increasing rights fees for major sports, they are passing the costs on by asking for rising fees from cable and dish companies, who in turn pass on the price increases to consumers.

However, there has been a very slow but steady erosion of cable subscribers over the past two years, so cable companies are attempting to hold the line on prices to consumers, and thus not increase fees paid to stations.

UFC President Dana White Sours on Boston, “Great to Hang Out, Not a Great Place to Put on Fights”

UFC president Dana White loves Boston, but following Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 26: Shogun vs. Sonnen event at the TD Gardens, it may be a while before he signs off on returning to the market.

The UFC has had to jump through numerous hoops to get its event all the way to fight day, and White is none too appreciative of that. In fact, when asked if the issues the company has had to deal with in getting Shogun vs. Sonnen off the ground affect his thinking about returning, he couldn’t deny it.

“I'd be a liar if I said no,” White said during a Monday conference call promoting the show.

One of the first hurdles the promotion ran into was a state requirement that all fighters have a social security number to be eligible to compete. That sounds simple enough, but it was troublesome considering many of the fighters on the card are from outside the United States.

Another issue developed when the Massachusetts State Athletic Commission (MSAC) was unsure how to handle Chael Sonnen’s testosterone replacement therapy due to its lack of experience in the matter.

If that weren’t enough, Unite Here – otherwise known as the Culinary Union – did its best to sabotage the event, filing separate complaints that minors should not be allowed to attend the event and that Sonnen should be denied a license “because Mr. Sonnen has been convicted of a crime involving moral turpitude.”

The “moral turpitude” claim stems from Sonnen’s January 2011 conviction on federal money laundering.

In reality, White believes the Culinary Union’s complaints had little to do with the charges cited in their letters. They had more to do with the fact that the union is battling to unionize Station Casinos, which is owned by UFC co-owners the Fertitta brothers.

“What they want is Station Casinos,” White declared. “If they get Station Casinos, it's another $10 million a year to the union. So they'll use any dirty tactic and spend as much money as it takes to try to get Station Casinos.”

The MSAC held a hearing this past Thursday to consider Sonnen’s TRT usage and the Culinary Union’s complaints.

The UFC eventually met all of the requirements on the social security issue, Sonnen’s TRT usage was approved contingent upon meeting specified testosterone levels both pre- and post-fight, and the Culinary Union complaints were eventually shot down, but enduring the process didn’t sit well with White.

Having grown up in the region and having lived for a time in Boston, White loves the city and is a fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, but he may be inclined to save Boston for his personal enjoyment in the future.

“It's a great place to hang out with my friends and eat, but not a great place to put on fights.”

I'm still confused by this new "FS1" station, specifically what kinds of sports will be aired live. How will Fox incorporate it's NFL coverage into the new station--can they just pull all of their NFL games off regular Fox and put them exclusively on FS1? I don't expect them to do that, but I'm just curious as to how much leverage they have with these cable companies.

FYI: I did some research on carriage fees, and on average, ESPN costs $4.70/month. FS1 looking for $0.80 - $1.50/month.

Just curious from a business perspective but what's the nature of Sportnet360's agreement to re-broadcast UFC content. Do they have a deal with Fox or the UFC directly? How does that work?
