Watch that video and then tell me he isn't dirty. Yeah ok, some of them are a stretch but there are more than one occasion where he clearly held on with the intent to injure.

Well if that's the case, then he let go as soon as Lavigne stepped in (unlike the Pierce fight where he gave one more good crank).

A bit of a different perspective on the Palhares situation. The article implies that Yves Lavigne explicitly instructs fighters to continue to hold submissions until he intervenes.

But here's an interesting twist on Lavigne and submissions. Two weeks ago the UFC released a video blog showing fight-night backstage footage, and included was a clip of Lavigne talking with Demian Maia prior to his UFC 170 bout with Rory MacDonald. The ref was giving instruction on subs, and told Maia that if MacDonald should tap, "please, do not let go. Let me pull you off that submission, just to make sure. Because I have to see the tap. If I don't see it and you let it go, I'm like ..." He shrugs. "And if he says, 'Oh, I didn't tap,' you're screwed, basically."
Assuming Lavigne gave the same talk before Saturday night's fight, Palhares was following the ref's instruction by holding on to the heel hook until Yves pulled him away. And it wasn't like he vehemently resisted Lavigne's tug. Within minutes of the finish, Shaun Al-Shatti of MMAfighting.com took to Twitter to report what Palhares told him about the sub: "Palhares says Lavigne instructed him to let go as soon as he stepped in, and he did that." Lavigne retweeted this, apparently in agreement.

Let's forget the ref involvement all together. Watch the gif again. Stare at the clock, using your peripheral vision to watch for the tap. From when the first tap makes contact, to him letting go, looks like a second in a half to me.
I'm talking about when he got suspended for holding the sub too long against Thomasz Drwal in the UFC. The one he got suspended 90 days for.

The only reason that sub was let go as quick as it was is because of the ref being on the ball. Lavinge jumped right on top of it when the tap came broke the hold up physically. If he had of reacted just verbally or by touching the fighter I have no doubt that Palhares holds on to long again.

(I watched the fight live and the replays just for the record)

He absolutely did that last night. The ref tells all fighters not to let go until they stop it. If every fighter had honor and didn't try to say they didn't tap ala Lindland or Chael then this wouldn't be near the problem. I haven't heard Carl say anything negative and he would know far more than any keyboard warrior.
