I like brawls. That Frye fight is crazy.

I'm sorry, but Bonnar-Griffin I was not the epitome of a hockey fight. The fight did go to the ground a couple of times albeit it was mostly a slug fest. That being said, Don Frye vs Yoshihiro Takayama at PRIDE 21 was an entertaining fight that truly resembled a hockey fight!

No surprise is seeing Wanderlei on the list twice. I am surprised that Cro Cop/Fedor didn't make it.

Yeah, great call. Best hockey fight is right.

Yep, IIRC those got 1 and 2 votes respectively.

I would have loved if, say, 100 folks had participated in this, to give a real depth of data to work with. As is, the results are more or less what we could have guessed, but I always find it interesting to see what little "wrinkles" come out when there's a lot more data to work with. For example, Randy-Vitor I might have come in for more love.

As is though, the early UFC's and early PRIDE didn't come in for much love. There's a definite bias towards recent events on here, which is I guess to be expected. If something like Penn-GSP I had happened 6 months ago, I guarantee it would have made at least an honorable mention, but as it was I think it got only 2 votes out of 120!

The results are about what I would've expected. I wish, though, that some people had been more specific so that Couture-Rizzo I could've made the list.

MMANews' 5 favorite MMA fights ever - RESULTS

I tallied the results of the very unofficial MMANews "5 favorite fights of all time" thread that I started here.

There were 120 fights named, meaning 24 folks participated.

There were a few responses that couldn't be determined due to insufficient info (for example Couture-Rizzo without naming which one, Hendo-Silva where multiple fights fit that description, Bonnar-Griffin without naming which one, Gracie-Sakuraba where multiple fights fit that description).

Ultimately though, these didn't impact the top five or their ranking, although it did affect the top five.

Here are the 5 favorite fights chosen by you:

Nick Diaz vs.Takanori Gomi at PRIDE 33 - 8 votes
Wanderlei Silva vs. Rampage Jackson II at PRIDE 28 - 8 votes
Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar I at TUF 1 Finale - 6 to 8 votes
Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79 - 5 votes
Matt Hughes vs. Frank Trigg II at UFC 52 - 5 votes

Griffin-Bonnar I is named as "6 to 8 votes" because in addition to 6 votes for "Griffin-Bonnar I", there were two votes of "Griffin-Bonnar" without naming which one. It's a decent assumption that both are for their first fight, although one person did vote Griffin-Bonnar II.

Assuming both unspecified votes were in fact for the first fight, our three favorite fights all tie at 8 votes and stand clearly over the others.

Honorable mentions went to Couture-Sylvia and Fedor-Cro Cop, the only two fights with 4 votes. A number of fights had 3 votes, and then on down.

Fights which included Wandy got more votes than any other fighter - the exact number isn't known due to the "insufficient info", but fights in which he participated had roughly 15-16 votes, vs. Fedor at number two with 13. However, Fedor had more fights in our top five voting, with seven different Fedor fights making top-5 lists.

    Thanks for participating! Interesting stuff.
