The point of having an interim champion is to defend the title and keep the top of the division from ending up in a stalemate while the real champion is unable to defend the belt. If the interim champion is unwilling to do this, maybe UFC should consider finding an interim champion that is

I clicked on this thread for the same reason as others apperently.I hate to quote a world champion douche bag but even Dana says "a champion should always be willing to defend his title" . Like EVERYONE says here it makes NO sence to have an interim if they have no intentions of defending it! Since #1 contender apperently doesnt mean anything anymore why not the interim title as well? Since they dont seem to want to defend just pass them over? maybe then they would defend?

To those of you who are two young Michael McDonald is also the namesake of a doobie brother and a man who made my mom's generation get excited (that is as descriptive as I will go).
I have to do the same thing when thinking about the full landscape with the lighter weight fighters. New to the UFC, a lot of the guys have bounced around weight classes, and I'm bad with names. It all comes down to me having the same problem

Also, am I alone in thinking they should have a smaller cage? Too much room, almost makes it feel like a different sport than some of the bigger guys sometimes.

This is so fucking ridiculous hahaha

Like everyone else is saying, what is even the point of creating a title that will not be defended??

Is Nog the only fighter to ever defend the "interm title"?

I guess McDonald makes the most sense to me. Do you put Easton above him or was that just the order in which you remembered the names?

    @Barao and Condit

I can understand Condit waiting somewhat for GSP because that is a big money making fight for him going against the number one PPV draw. Not a huge fan of him waiting but financially it makes sense.

However for Barao there is no real reason to wait Cruz isn't a draw and still relatively unknown as well as the rest of the division. They need this division to be alot more active then it currently is and promoted a bit more.

Maybe since everybody will have a title, and the UFC will get the spectacle they want, we will get a coherent rankings system, and fights that make sense.

    Here is an example:

    1. Champion Georges St. Pierre
    2. Interim Champion Carlos Condit
    3. Interim Interim Champion Johnny Hendricks
    4. Interim Interim Interim Champion Nick Diaz
    5. Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Jon Fitch
    6. Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Rory McDonald
    7. Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Martin Kampmann
    8. Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Demian Maia
    9. Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Jake Ellenberger
    10. Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Interim Champion Josh Koscheck

These rankings were off the top of my head. I didn't put alot of thought into them, so please don't criticize.
Holy fuck this is funny shit. It's a little bit sad though because it makes just about as much sense as having an interim champion not bother defending the title.

But they need to take more control of this with this interim shit, they aren't the true champs of the division, they should be fighting when another contender arises.
Agreed. On both the "I'll Wait" thing and the Faber thing.

The thing I don't get is that while a fighter only has one brand and thus might want to wait to get the best chance for endorsement deals (why risk it before Cruz comes back); the UFC has the ability to build up new stars. And yet they keep doing things like repeat shots for Faber.

These might be some good fights.
