| Hughes "I’m a nine-time UFC champion" WHAT!!!
Hughes says "I’m a nine-time UFC champion, He's not a nine time champ he won the belt like what 2 times?, if you defend the belt how can win it at the same time, either you win the title or defend it.
If you defend it your not becoming the champ again.
This is the stupidest thing I ever heard, the UFC and Dana is so idiotic it would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
EXAMPLE: Anderson Silva is a 1 time UFC mw champ, he won it 1 time and defended it twice PERIOD!!!

I see what your saying. I have a hard time understanding it, but I do see how defending the belt 7 times can make you the champ 7 times, in his eyes.
Eitherway, if UFC gave out new belts for each ufc, then I can see that happening, otherwise he's just defending his belt so doesn't really make him what he says he is.
Where did you hear/read him saying that?

Where did you hear/read him saying that? | So I've got some coaches that really know what's going on and they are pushing me. It’s human nature to take the easy way out. I’m a nine-time UFC champion, and yet I’m still human in the fact that I will look for the easy way out. I need to be pushed like everybody else does and now I've got people that are going to do that.”

What the UFC is saying in fact is every time a champ fights he is not the champ and the title is vacant when the bell sounds and that also makes it that you never defend your title, you win the title every time.
You can't have it both ways either you defend your championship or you are winning a vancant title in every title fight.

Yeah, I don't get it either, Tim Sylvia claims to be a five-time champion as well. Must be a Miletich thing.
I thought I understood it one day, but lo and behold, I was wrong.

I'm don't like Hughes, but I don't really have a problem with his statement. It's a bit simpler than saying "I've won the championship twice and defended it eight times, seven of which were successful."
But while we're picking nits, how is the UFC saying "in fact is every time a champ fights he is not the champ and the title is vacant when the bell sounds and that also makes it that you never defend your title, you win the title every time."
Is it the UFC's job to somehow fact-check and correct every mis-statement any of it's fighters might have made? Should Dana be issuing counter-points to every interview?
It seems like Hughes made a statement that you've somehow attributed to the UFC, and then gone on to editorialize it, with as much skewed logic as Hughes displayed in his initial statement.
But maybe that's just me.

Hey, does anyone know if these guys get a new belt everytime they win it? Like either for just having at the house or carrying around?

That doesn't make it UFC policy.
Dana says things. Things like..."if you win this fight, you'll get a title shot."
That still doesn't make it UFC policy.

This is a tradition in fighting that dates back to the original UFC's. They, in fact, didn't have a traditional defending champion like we have now. So each event, they actually had a guy winning a new championship. Ken Shamrock was the first of these, beating Dan Severn by guillitine choke. This tradition still carries on today in calling the winner of every title fight a champion. It may not make sense anymore when you analyze it under a microscope but it's still a tradition and everybody says it, not just Hughes....
