UFC Quick Quote: Matt Hughes on the future of Matt Hughes at UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets — MMAmania.com

“I’m not gonna come out here and be somebody’s highlight reel. It’s just not me. I just have to go back to the drawing board and see what’s going on, see what I want to do. I’ve got to see what my family wants to do and I’ve got to pray on it. Dana White and the UFC have treated me like family, so I’ve got to see what they want me to do and I’ve got to see where my heart is at…. Do I want to fight Matt Serra? Yah, I do. But am I going to die if I don’t get to fight him? No, not at all. There’re bigger things out there than fighting Matt Serra.”

– Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes talks about his fighting future via MMAWeekly.com after his lopsided submission loss to Georges St. Pierre at UFC 79: “Nemesis.” It seems like the retirement talk (real or contrived) always surfaces after major events. See Chuck Liddell and Rich Franklin. Therefore, if St. Pierre defeats Serra I’d find it hard to believe that the UFC wouldn’t book Hughes-Serra for mid to late 2008 (depending on the health of Serra). In fact, Hughes himself intimates as much right here.
I don't think Hughes can elevate himself to gsp's caliber, It breaks my heart to say it but against St Pierre he no longer even possesses the strength advantage.

I think he has a few good fights left in him. I'd like to see him fight Koscheck, Fitch and Swick, if he ever gets thru his injury. Good stuff man.

i would like to see him fight more, i always like watching him fight. he is one of my favorites. he has had a great career if he were to step out now,he has nothing to be disappointed about.

Yeah he is in a tough spot because he can compete with most of the division except the champ. I wouldn't mind seeing him in a fight with Serra and then some superfights or cross weight fights.

I say he's done everything he could do in the UFC. He should go fight in some lesser orgs like WEC, M1, K1, and dominate there.

He's still one of the biggest names and is great for the sport. Many casual fans would follow him and bring more publicity to MMA in different orgs.

I dont know if its just me but I coudnt go play t-ball after playing in the major leagues. I know hughes wont go to a lesser orgs. He of all people wouldnt feel any self worth from a down grade.

There was an article on MMA Weekly where he specifically said he would never fight for another organization period.

Quote:

One thing we can get straight. I am family with the UFC. I will never jump ship. I will never go to another organization,” he declared. “This is just a word for you guys out there, don't even come to me with offers because I am not accepting them. I won't fight anybody, anywhere else, unless the UFC wants me to.” White couldn’t have been more pleased saying, “I love when he says that.

I wouldn't call it a downgrade, just a digress. It's a different crop of fighters, a new title, and I'm sure they would come up with the money. Personally, I would like the sport to grow as a whole and I think anything that would bring more attention to other orgs would be great.

Couture, or Liddell fighting in Elite XE, M1, or strikeforce would be great for MMA as a whole. I think it hurts the sport that casual fans didn't know who Fedor, CroCop, Rampage, Wand, and Big Nog is. These fighters deserve as much money as possible but unlike boxing, they obviously are not getting the draw in the US like they would get around the world, especially Japan.

If Dana white was going by popularity to consider pay like he does with most original UFC fighters, we would be screwed out of a Nog vs Silvia fight.

I think Dana should now start thinking about the sport of MMA and less about the UFC. I think a mass merger would still be a great idea.

if Hughes lost to Serra and got to fight the rubber match with Penn and lost that....I wouldn't be opposed to him having a few fights in the WEC. Sounds like something him and Zuffa could work out...Hughes fights a few up and comers in WEC and the WEC gives some Hit Squad guys fights on the undercard

I wouldn't mind see him fight at MW in the WEC. Definitely some interesting matches for him there.

On the other hand, I don't think he's done yet in the UFC. I would love to see him fight Serra and Karo.
