Okami just fought at UFC 92 so he is probably not up for a fight for a few months. You gotta remember these guys put in GRUELING camps. Most of them aren't willing to just go from fight to fight quickly cause they want a breather. I am trying to take a different angle from the probably already overstated "Okami is boring" angle. Sure, he is one of the decision kings, but people have to remember this is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS. Not everyone is a knockout artist. Anyone of these guys can knock the other out with a "lucky punch", it is a lot harder to be a person like Okami that people have a hard time putting away. I wish Okami would dedicate himself to learning some kind of signiture move or something to lean on instead of his opponent though. lol

okami is boring yes, but i dnt think that has anything to do w/ it as he was slated for a shot before but simply got hurt. he'll get his shot im sure but i doubt he'll sit and wait for the winner of this fight. i'd like a cote/okami fight. maybe we'd see something exciting from okami bc i kno cote would bring it. man i really hope they make that fight now to tell u the truth

March 1, 2008-UFC 82- Anderson Silva beat Dan Henderson
Yushin Okami beat Evan Tanner (RIP)
October 25, 2008-UFC 90- Okami Vs Silva, Okami broke his hand, Cote gets the shot instead
On December 23, 2008, it was announced that Anderson Silva's next title defense will be against Thales Leites at UFC 97 in Montreal
December 27, 2008-UFC 92- Okami beats Lister
Dana could have waited 4 days to see if Okami won his fight. He didn't, Leites gets the shot instead. TUF ends around June. Silva and Leites fight in April. If he beats Leites fairly quickly without taking much damage, I can see Silva facing Okami sometime this summer, maybe the same event with Bisping vs. Hendo. I think that would be the best case scenerio. Make sense?

Looks like Okami is just the odd man out. If Silva beats Leites, he will probably get Chuck (if he beats Rua). Kinda shitty situation for Okami. Then, like others have mentioned, he lost his title shot when he injured his hand. I've also heard that winner of nate vs wilson will get title shot, and there is also eventual winner of of henderson vs bisping. Seems like Okami really fell down the list of contenders.
As far as Okami, I feel he should be #1 contender. Although some find him boring, I think he's a great fighter. I think the only potential match up that makes sense at this point is Palhares, since most other top MW are in action in the coming months. I also would have said Denis Kang but his loss to Belcher messed that up. I also have no real desire to see an Okami Belcher 2.
Great thread though!

This is kind of a dumb matchup to me. Leities will get dominated. If they were going for marketing they would put him against like Bisping. Definitely not any kinda super fight for sure, just another Silva punching bag. I mean "IF" Silva is telling the truth about retiring it would be nice to see him go up against a challenge before he does. Leities does NOT fall into the "challenge" category I'm sorry to say. Hopefully the rest of the card has good fights or it probably won't sell too well.

The UFC wants to say they have the P4P best fighter in the world so they need to keep Anderson Silva safe, geeeeee Fedor has gotta loose sometime.

You can't disvalue Machida and Okami 's accomplishments cause there boring.

Also Machida is making a real effort to appeal to the English speaking MMA fans.

From what I've gathered from Dana White interviews, Okami IS getting the shot.
Now, the fact that it was announced that Silva would fight Leites a couple days before Okami fought makes me think that Dana had a reason for all this. Okami has never fought all that often, so it's possible he specifically told Dana that if he won, he would only want to fight Silva sometime in the summer, which lead Dana to look for the NEXT guy, and was left with Leites.
That being said, I think Leites is a descent matchup style wise, even though I think Anderson will plow through him.
Furthermore, Dana saying you definitely have the NEXT title shot doesn't necesserily mean shit. Still, I think and hope Okami will get his shot. By the itme he does, the rest of the division will have worked itself out.
The only wildcard in this situation is the timing of the reality show. I beleive whoever wins that will get a shot. The show starts soemtime in April though right? So will finish airing sometime in May, which means Hendo and Bisping won't fight until sometime in June give or take. Which means barring injury this could all work out.
