Default Few thoughts and predictions on UFC 96

-Quinton Jackson vs. Keith Jardine - Yawn. Ok OK. Not yawn. But I can only see this fight go ONE way. Punch punch punch punch, kick kick kick kick, punch punch, KO. I'm going with Rampage with a 2nd round KO.

-Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Shane Carwin - Most interesting fight on the card imo. UFC and the UFC fans are really hyping Carwin up to be this monster with crazy powerful striking power. But I can see through the BS. Carwin is only 10 fights into his career, he has not fought anyone half way decent and he still has plenty to learn before he gets to fight a Lesnar or Couture. But Gonzaga has been so inconsistent I don't know if I should root for the guy or not. He can come as the Gonzaga that looked incredibly impressive in his last fight, or he could just get knocked out again. I'm going to say Gonzaga with a UD.

-Matt Hammil vs. Mark Munoz - Munoz is no slouch. I've watched him a few times and he's looked good every time. However, Hammil still is definitely one of my favorite fighters. His only 2 losses coming from a BS decision vs Bisping and a very valiant effort against Franklin. This will be a close one, but I'm going with Hammil is UD.

-Gray Maynard vs. Jim Miller - Maynard is a beast. And Jim Miller will not be able to stop getting taken down by Maynard. Maynard with a UD.

-Matt Brown vs. Pete Sell - To move up to the next competition in your weight class, you gotta go through the "gatekeepers". Guys like Sell, Travis Lutter, Melvin Guillard...all gatekeepers. Let's see what Matt Brown's got. Brown with a choke in the 3rd.

-Brandon Vera vs. Mike Patt - With all the releasing going on in the UFC, I'm thinking this might be a loser leaves the UFC match. Vera has lost 3 out of his last 4 and has not looked good since beating Mir in 06. Mike Patt is...a person. If vera can't beat him, it would be very easy to cut Vera from the UFC. Vera TKO 1st round.

-Kendall Grove vs. Jason Day - Always been a Kendall Grove fan. But Jason Day is a tough striker. I expect to see a very good match here, great striker vs striker. Grove, KO 3rd round.

I think if Jardine gets a rhythm going with his leg kicks, he can beat Rampage, just like Forrest did to beat Rampage. Jardine has some of the best leg kicks in the business.

I too am most curious to see the Carwin/Gonzaga fight. This would be a big win for Carwin and would probably catapult him into a fight with a top contender. It all depends which Gonzaga shows up. If Carwin can keep it standing up, that's his only chance. The instant it hits the ground, it's all over.

I may be out of line here, but I already think that Maynard can contend for the title. He already beat Frank Edgar quite convincingly, he just has to beat a few of the other top guys. I would have liked to see Edgar go against Tyson Griffin, or maybe Nate Diaz.

What d'ya know? Here is Brandon Vera, on an undercard! Wow, how we have fallen. Here's a guy that has been so overpaid, and is now where he is. He has a long way to go before he can get anywhere close to being where the hype had him. This will be the most important fight of his life - like you already said, he's probably fighting for his spot in the UFC.

It should be a decent card, however not enough to make me pony up to buy the PPV. I do not understand why the UFC does not have a title fight on every single card....there are easily enough weight classes to do it.

They should really have named this card UFC 96: Suckers Walk.
or
UFC 96: Pink Slips are Already Filled Out, just Waiting for Dana's Signature

Jackson/Jardine - This is a wild card fight. Both fighters can be inconsistent, and both fighters can end the fight quickly if they are on their A game. I'd rather have Jardine win, but I don't see it happening.

Gonzaga/Carwin - The most interesting thing about this fight would be if it illustrates how deep Carwin's gas tank is. Gabe is more skilled and more versitile, but is apparently allergic to getting hit very hard...sadly, Carwin can do just that. I'm going to say Carwin's bandwagon gets a new coat of paint and some shiney new rims after this fight.

Hamill/Munoz - Ugh. Couldn't be less interested in this. In an obviously desperate attempt to keep a mysteriously popular fighter on the cusp of relevance, Hamill gets yet another undersized LHW, a WEC casualty who has only looked good against C and D level guys. I'm still hoping Munoz destroys him, but I think Silva hand-picked this well enough that Hamill wins the D. I don't think Hamill gets cut from the org even if he somehow loses.

Maynard/Miller - This is the most interesting fight on the card to me. I think Miller is much more skilled than Maynard, but I'm also betting Maynard has good enough sub defense to have it go to the judges. While I'm betting the crowd starts booing within 3 minutes, this is the fight I really want to see. I hope neither of these guys gets the axe after this card, but I wouldn't count on it.

Brown/Sell - Brown is more well rounded and I'm betting he has more in the tank. I'm going with Brown finishing it in the 3rd, could be TKO, could be sub. Brown is more safe than Sell, but even if Sell does get cut, he'll probably re-emerge Clementi-like from a lower org when Zuffa is trying to build another name for casual fans to follow.

Vera/Patt - yet another transparent attempt to keep a popular fighter in the minds of casual fans, but at least it's on the undercard. The fact that Vera is even fighting Patt is an indication that he shouldn't be in the UFC still. The fact that it's relegated to an undercard is an illustration that the UFC doesn't want another org to pick him up--although that would probably be the very best thing that could happen to his career. If Vera doesn't finish this in the first, he should be cut. I don't see Patt in the UFC after this unless he somehow wins.

Grove/Day - while I'm pleased that Grove has been relegated to the bottom of the undercard, I'm still disappointed that he hasn't been cut yet, and I'll chalk another one up to the mysterious popularity of otherwise very pedestrian TUF alumni. I'm hoping Doomsday hurts him early and frequently, as I still think Grove is a completely classless and unethical punk for selling out his teammates with that Team Dagger bullshit on the reality show.

I dont' know man. I can't really hate Grove for that, or even Kos for his TUF actions. Because in the end, it's a reality TV show....they find the most interesting thing about these guys, and then skew it to make it more interesting.

Kos's messing with Leben--who I'm sure would get on my nerves as well--was one brief moment and--not that drinking excuses things--a drunken mess. Grove made repeated sober and calculated decisions to sell his teammates out.

At no point since then has he done anything to change my opinion of him.

You either have integrity or you don't. I don't see Grove as having it. For the record, I don't like Koscheck either, but I don't think he's as big of a punk as Grove is.

I am not a fan of Grove either - I especially cannot stand his victory routine. I got absolute joy in watching Patrick Cote kick his ass.

However, I must say he looked impressive in his win over Tanner (may he rest in peace), and may be poised to start moving his career forward. He's only 26, and he certainly has incredible reach on his side. If he stays focused and dedicated, like he looked against Tanner, he can probably do fairly well. One loss though, and I can see the UFC giving him the boot.

Bah, predicted 6 out of 7 right, not bad at all.
But damn, too many KOs and TKOs...my decision predictions were ALL wrong.

Kendall Grove:
I like Kendall and his victory routine. Then again I also like Tito Ortiz as well. Kendall had a good showing and shut some of the critics up.

Rampage Jackson:
Very good fight as expected against a highly unorthodox fighter. Im glad Jardine loss. A fight between Rashad and Rampage is more appealing to me anyways. Machida = yawn.

Carwin:
Got in there and did what he was expected to do. I thought he would win in the 2nd round though. Hats off to him.

Vera:
Looked very impressive tonight. I can see he has finally adjusted to his weight class. I have never seen him in such good shape (kinda reminds me of Swick/Bisping). Hats off to you Vera (damn I love that victory dance hahaha)
