| What if UFC 1 aired tomorrow???
Imagine that the current top fighters of today all boarded a time machine back to 1993 and took part in, lets say, a one night, sixteen man tourney, who wins, who do you place in what brackets?
Dunno if anybody will respond to this post, but I like fantasy arguments and who beat who? discussions.
So, who ya got??
Anderson Silva vs. Rampage Jackson
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett
Brock Lesnar vs. Andrei Arlovski
Georges St. Pierre vs Thiago Alves
Forrest Griffin vs. Chuck Liddell
BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
Wanderli Silva vs. Randy Couture

If it were to happen you would find that they would more likely have matches like Brock (wrestler) vs BJ (bjj). They had no weight classes or restrictions back then, which is what made it such fun
Remember Keith Hackney vs that huge Sumo guy Tuli.Fun Times!

I would see someone like Anderson, or Jackson winning. Even GSP could make a good run at it. I do think the HW's would win their first round, but gas out and end up getting caught.

I can pretty well guarantee that a one night tournament with all those guys in it would be won by an alternate.

First round
-------------------------------------------------
Anderson Silva vs. Rampage Jackson
... Silva wins by KO
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett
... Fedor wins by decision
Brock Lesnar vs. Andrei Arlovski
... Arlovski by immediate KO
Georges St. Pierre vs Thiago Alves
... GSP by decision
Forrest Griffin vs. Chuck Liddell
... Forrest Griffin by decision... I see this fight going like Griffin vs. Rampage... Griffin plays it smart
BJ Penn vs. Jon Fitch
... Penn by submission
Rashad Evans vs. Dan Henderson
... Henderson by decision... I think he has the experience and wrestling skills to counter Rashad's strengths
Wanderli Silva vs. Randy Couture
... Wand by KO... similar to Liddell vs. Couture 2 and 3.
Second Round
--------------------------------------------------------
Anderson Silva vs. BJ Penn
... Silva by KO
Fedor vs. Forrest Griffin
... Fedor by KO
Arlovski vs. Dan Henderson
... upset, Henderson by GNP TKO
GSP vs. Wand
... if this fight were at 185 or 205, I'd pick GSP for the upset, but in an open-weight GP (e.g. UFC 1), Wand takes this by TKO.
Third Rnd
----------------------------------------------------
Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson
... I see a replay of their first fight, Silva manhandles Henderson on his way to a stoppage
Fedor vs. Wandelei
... biggest upset ever: Wanderlei by decision in a bloodbath of a fight. I see a return of an aggressive Axe Murderer, I see it going back and forth because they are going to trade, but Wanderlei keeps it standing and outworks the best fighter on the planet.
Main Event
-------------------------------------
Anderson Silva vs. Wanderlei Silva
Anderson Silva by early KO. Wanderlei has that chin, I think he can hide it from Fedor by applying enough pressure and getting lucky. But I think The Spider finds his chin no matter what, and I think it happens very early in the fight, maybe even first minute.
Anderson Silva, the first UFC champ.
Hah hah, this shit's crazy anyhow, please don't read too much into it. It's all MMA math, which doesn't make any sense to begin with, it just is what it is. It all totally depends on who gets matched up with who. So if you chose different brackets, you'd probably get a different winner, and I'd probably agree with you 100%.
[Edit: I don't think I'm giving due credit to Fedor. I think he wins the tourney 99% of the time, regardless of who he's matched up with... but this whole question isn't really interesting if you assume Fedor is invincible.]
For the record, I think it'd be a totally different tournament if it happened at 205... but then of course you'd be hardpressed to get guys like Barnett and Arlovski down to that weight. My pick for a 205 fight? Not sure, it'd totally depend on the brackets and I don't want to work through it again. But I'd put money on Rashad Evans and GSP doing a whole lot better... those guys'd definitely have a shot whereas I don't think GSP has a chance of fighting four fights at HW in one night... I think he'd sustain too much damage.
Here's the thing I'd be interested in. Allow anything-goes rules. In particular, allow headbutts. Then throw in Mark Coleman in his prime... actually, I'd really like to see Rashad Evans fight with headbutts. When you can take a guy down and then just grind him down, it's tough to beat a guy like that, especially if he's multidimensional like Rashad.

is it no rules no time limit like the first ufc?? if thats the case, i see fedor and arlovski making it the farthest. gsp usually goes deep into his fights so i dont know if he would last, especially since he is one of the lighter guys. if i had to place money it would be on fedor.
