By hard what do you mean? Swimming requires more muscle groups but running demands more from the legs and lungs.

I would have to say long distance swimming would be harder than running.

lots of technique involved in both... though i haven't really competed in swimming, while i've competed a great deal in running, (mostly 5Ks). unless you've really run for awhile through different weather conditions and terrain, there are a lot of deceiving intricacies involved in it... footwork, when to push yourself, gas tank, VO2 max, lactic threshold, and the like.

though i'm sure all these things come into play in swimming as well, so what do i know.

I can't seem to kick at the same time I pull with my arms for swimming... but I ran a 5K race half in the bag no probkem. I did pretty well too!
So swimming is more difficult, for me anyway.
