Appearances can evidently be deceiving. The beating that Diego Sanchez took at the hands of BJ Penn which eventually led to the stoppage of their lightweight championship match at UFC 107 looked to be about as bad as it gets in MMA. Not so, claims “The Nightmare.”
Having to deal with a forehead gash that went to the bone, a lip cut that nearly reached his chin and other facial contusions, it would not have been shocking if Sanchez spent a few months on the sidelines. While that still might be the case, the New Mexico native claimed he’s “90% healed with no scar.”
Thanks to the quick work by a plastic surgeon and chiropractor, it has been rumored that Sanchez could return by the end of the first quarter of 2010. While no opponent has yet been named, Kenny Florian makes a lot of logical sense. That leaves both Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar to contend with each other or BJ Penn in the New Year.
