Default Matt Hughes

This may have been covered long ago when I wasn't part of the forum, but I came to a realization

Had Matt Serra not been injured for his fight with Hughes following TUF 6, we very well could have had Matt Hughes as champion. Who knows how long he could have held onto the belt.

I don't know, it just struck me as something hard to imagine. Not having GSP as a dominant force that he is.

he probably would have held it until he ran into gsp or alves.

no disrespect to hughes, he is one of the best of all time but these young guys seem to have his number. he is too one-dimensional for this generation of fighter.

im looking forward to UFC 112 though, i think he still has a place on the top of the card but i dont think he has the tools to challenge for the title again.

I think GSP and Alves would have got him it was just a matter of time. But you are right Hughes can still wrestle which put him on thesame plane as Kos, and Fitch. But now he has been passed by the young guns.

You are right though Hughes is one of the greatest of all time

Matt Hughes is a legend in his own time, but a win over Serra for the title would've just kept it warm for GSP. I also REALLY wonder how Hughes would've fared in a five round fight against Serra, for I'm not all too sure Serra wouldn't pull a sub if Hughes plied his lay and pray style and their eventual fight was pretty even, moreso than expected.

The moment the sport began to evolve and Hughes didn't, he got passed by and is just slowly but surely declining. He got ruined against Penn, lucked out against GSP at 50 and beat the shit out of a completely gassed Joe Riggs after Karo dropped out. Since then, his record has been spotty at best and only really shined against a guy of which, the sport has passed by more than Hughes, in Royce Gracie.

As of UFC 79, I don't think Matt Hughes was really even a top 5 WW. At the time you have Kos, Fitch, Diego, GSP, Alves and Karo who I think all really pose a challenge to Hughes.
