Default Question for the BJJ/JJ experts out there........

What are the fundamental differences between Jiu-Jitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

You mean Japanese ju-jitsu?

Well to be far Ju-jitsu is just a word for martial arts for the most part.

Okay, I did Google it.........BJJ is ground work, and JJ is standing up predominantly. Would you guys agree this is the majority of it?

Yeah, it ties in with the history of the lineage. Jits was mostly throws, then came Kano Jigaro and "created" a new style that was called Kano Jiu-Jitsu and then Kodakan Jiu Jitsu once the Kodakan was established. There was an emphasis by some practitioners to focus on the newaza aspect of the game, the ground game, such as Maeda who traveled overseas to challenge wrestlers and other fighters through out the world. When he came to Brazil and taught the Gracies the style, even though it was Judo it was still called Kodakan Jiu Jitsu at the tame. Then the Kodakan changed the name over to Judo and adapted many rules and regulations. By this time Helio and Carlos Gracie Sr, were widely practicing and teaching their style, which was called Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and refused to adapt the new rules and regulations and of course, the name change (as it should be Brazilian Judo, realy)...interestingly, BJJ is more closer to original "Judo" than modern Judo is.

Well keep in mind that the samurai where using throws quite a bit as a means of taking down their enemies... In that kind of warfare wearing 60+ pounds of armor and landing on your back usually ment you where dead. Throws where extremely useful.
