| Advice needed for charity MMA Tourney
I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me. I am entered in a MMA tourney on Oct 15. Its to benefit out of work families who are members of my union. UFCW local 655. So its helping feed kids and parents pay bills. I wrestled in HS and have a little BJJ training. but not enough to say I'm that great. I'm looking for any advice. Techniques to focus on or avoid. Nutrition. Exercise. Fight day prep. anything. I don't know if the event is going to be taped, but if it is, I'll post links of me getting ktfo. There is also a kickboxing tourney, but with wrestling exp, i figure i got a better shot at MMA. Let me know if you have anything that will help. Thanks.

Just don't turn your back like the dude on your AV...jk
What I would do is study GSP's technique, as in when he sets up the shot and watch how he does it, this is only applicable if you are more comfortable with your jits...
what you can also do is leg kick the bejeezes out of him, get his legs weak, therefore the TD is much easier..
I'm no expert though, you should ask someone with the experience..

there is not mandated weight cut. the match-ups are set up by exp and weight. I'm cutting weight on my own. I'm 5'10 and 235. but trying to get down to 215-225. I run and am in decent shape but I'm stepping it up for this. I am training with some other guys I work with who are also in the event, but the person setting it up is a 5th degree black belt in BJJ, Kenpo, Kajukenbo, and was an amature muay thai competitor, and is offering free training. I've only met with him once, and am trying to get as much stand up advice as I can get. I feel pretty good with my ground game. I'm sure I'd get destroyed my Maia or even Rani Yahya, but I can defend pretty well and know quite a few subs confidently. I'm really looking for fight day prep more then anything. I appreciate all the help. I will try to stay calm tbear. bar fights are a bit different, I'll have to be sober for this one. nerves will be an issue I'm sure, which is why I'm prepping as much as I can. I'm not looking to make a career out of this, I just dont want to get hurt. thanx 23xtreme. I've been watching a lot of video, ufc, pride, KOTC, strikeforce, UCE, etc. but you can never have too much info. I hope to get more advice, but thanx to all who responded.

As far as the fight, keep your hands up and chin down.
Set up your take downs with jabs/strike of your choice. Don't just shoot in from outer space.
If you end up in the guys guard, keep tight, don't let him take control of your arms/head. Remain in control and keep your weight on him.
Try not to close your eyes if the guy goes off on you with strikes, keep your eyes open, it's the punch/kick you don't see that KO's you usually.

Sounds like wrestling is your base, if so do like 23 said and study GSP's lead in for TD's, he sets them up rather then charging in stupidly. Also Sonnen isn't too bad of a guy to look at as he managed to take down guys who were meant to outwrestle him.
When you're on top or even on the bottom, don't let your opponent get wrist control on you at all costs.
I don't train and I might just be a "keyboard warrior", but you're doing what I wish I could do, so I wish you the best of luck
