Default How much does not fighting hurt a fighter?

For example, Vitor Belfort hasn't fought in a while. How much will that really hurt him come fight night? I mean, if he is in the gym sparring and training hard, is it really going to matter? What exactly gets rusty when you don't fight, even if you train?

Only thing I can come up with would be the crowd and being in the spotlight. I can see it being an easy thing to become un-adjusted to that, then again, I can see never getting adjusted to that period.

It definitely makes a significant difference in any fighter. Consistency is key to being the best. While it plays a huge factor, I don't want to think about how Vitor hasn't fought in the cage since Franklin... because I really want him to win.

It's also the same ordeal with Shogun/Rashad. Who knows how they're both going to feel come the title-fight, especially Shogun.

It also just has to do with the difference between real competition vs practice/training. It's true in any sport, not just MMA. Take track and field for instance. No good sprinter would ever be able to match the speed they reach in a meet during practice. The combination of adrenaline, competing against others, and being in the mental state to do your best leads to better performance.

You can spar all day long, but it's a lot different when it's not your training partner, mistake actually are costly, there's a crowd, etc...
