I've been losing sleep over this match up since the night of UFC126 when it was announced. Here's my key dilemma; I would like to dismiss all but one of Shogun's loses to injuries/judging (Coleman, Forrest, Machida) with the only legit defeat going to Babulu in his 5th career fight in 2003. Even if I can dismiss the loss to Forrest as the result of injury, the truth is, he's coming off another injury and substantial layoff. Jones is fresh as hell and riding a tidal wave of confidence.
I'd like to think that Shogun's fancy new "American surgery" will fix all of his problems but I can't. I think Shogun's key to victory will be his ability to actually hit Jon Jones (nobody's really tested his chin yet). I think Jones knows this and will use his wrestling to take the fight to Shogun rather than let him stand in the pocket and get comfortable. Bones would be wise to keep Shogun off balance, and I think with his reach advantage (remember Forrest's has great reach) and outstanding cardio (remember how Shogun looked against Coleman) he will be effective at doing that. I worry for Shogun on the ground if he's fatigued and Bones gets top position (we could see some elbows of legend).
I would put my money on a healthy Shogun. Unfortunately this is the real world and I can't call a winner . . . . I also don't have any money to bet, either.
