Matt Serra?

The guy hasnt fought in almost a year, and he isnt rumoured to be on any upcoming card. Unless I missed something, hes still under contract and injured im assuming? Wtf happened to him?

(Looks like Koscheck is taking a year off too, I know he suffered a broken face, but wtf happened to Serra?)

I thought i heard that he was going to retire soon. Could be wrong. He has a couple fights left in him, but not much more.

He's more into his gym at this point. Pretty much retired, but might come back for a rematch with Hughes or something else of interest. He and his wife just had a baby too, I believe.

Serra was virtually retired before he appeared on TUF, having fought just twice in somethig like a 4 year period.

As I understand it, he took the spot on the show because it was still pretty new [read, not as horrible as it is now] and would get him some name-recognition which would be great for his gym. While he's a confident guy, but he'd been fighting at LW for four or five 5 years before the show, and TUF had competing a full weight-class above, against guys that had 20-25lbs of cageweight on him.

But then he caught lightning in a bottle [though I still think the final was a draw and needed another round] and then he REALLY caught lightning in a bottle. Beating Georges set him up for some bigger paydays and big-name fights, but I never saw him as a deep WW contender.

I'm betting he'd come out for big paydays if he can keep the weight off and stay healthy.

I thought Serra always had huge problems just making 170 because of his love of pasta.

He did say some shit before and after his fight with Chris Lytle.

At UFC 119:

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and one-time UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra were handed indefinite medical suspensions by the Indiana Gaming Commission following losses at UFC 119 on Saturday in Indianapolis.

Filipovic was knocked out by a Frank Mir knee in the third round of their plodding heavyweight main event at the Conseco Fieldhouse. Serra, meanwhile, absorbed sustained punishment in a unanimous decision loss to friend and former “The Ultimate Fighter” rival Chris Lytle. A Renzo Gracie jiu-jitsu black belt, Serra chose to stand with the much longer Lytle for the full 15 minutes, most of the time getting the worst of the exchanges.

The suspensions were confirmed by Indiana Gaming Commission Athletic Division Director Andrew Means. Both Cro Cop and Serra must spend a minimum of 180 days on the shelf and pass a CT scan before they can return to action, said Means.

Right after UFC 119, Sherdog suggested the following for Serra:

Forecast for Serra: It would be nice to see Serra make another run at his natural weight class -- 155 pounds. As that is unlikely to happen, the much-loved Long Islander will return to his usual schedule of one to two appearances a year inside the Octagon. Possible future opponents for him could include Marcus Davis, American Kickboxing Academy’s Mike Swick and the winner of the forthcoming matchup between Karo Parisyan and Dennis Hallman.

I think he is concentrating on coaching and cornering fighters.

And Josh seems to be concentrating on his twitter and his blog....maybe he is still recovering/find some confidence after that last fight.

He did not reply to the people asking if it was going to be at 185 or 170 and he didn't reply saying who he would be fighting.

He appears to be training around San Jose too

To RH: I think Serra/Lytle 1 should have been a draw as well.

I wonder why there wasnt any kind of announcement made? Just seems weird for a fighter to go out like that, so silently.

I cant believe that Serra was out for half a year after the Lytle fight, I dont remember it being that bad of a beating tbh. I guess it makes a little more sense as to why hes not rumoured any time this year.

I think theres still some good matchups out there for Serra tbh, I dont think he'll be champ again, but that doesnt mean I wouldnt like to see him back in action.

And I dont have Twitter or any of that stuff, but looks like it is good for keeping up with the fighters eh?

I wonder who they'll get to fight Kos at 139? I guess it all depends on what weight hes fighting at...I still dont know why he would go up to MW. I dont like Kos that much but hes a solid top WW.

Hopefully he stays at WW and gets a fight with a ranked opponent...I know its kind of soon for the winner, But Id like to see Kos vs the winner of Shields/Ellenberger myself.

Kos/Story doesnt sound too bad, and it makes sense time-wise.
