Title Contender Requirements

With all the UFC controversy as of late regarding people getting title shots and not deserving, I am now a little curious as to what everyone thinks qualifies someone as a legitimate contender.

What kind of streak, how many top 10 wins, etc. What are your minimum requirements in order for a fighter to get a title shot?

Hard to say what the streak should be because each division has different level of depth of not only fighters, but HIGHLY RANKED fighters.

The LW division is loaded. Ranking the guys is hard cause A lot of the guys are so closely ranked but I would say 5-6 wins, with 3 top 15 wins.
The HW is not as loaded, so maybe 3 wins, with at least 1 top 10 win.
WW, MW, LHW are fairly deep divisions, so perhaps 4-5 wins, with at least 2 top 10 wins.

Rock-paper-scissors 3 out of five wins

The streak depends on how many of the last 5 or so fights were top 5. I would give the nod to a guy with 3-1 record [all fights top 5] last one a win over a guy 5-0 who only faught guys below top 10 & 15.
Basicly who should get it the next guy inline. Most will agree Hendricks is there Daiz is not, and the other famous one Sonnen is not either.

Thats why I like brackets it is what it is. Only time you need to alter is injury and thats just the next guy in line who takes it.

It depends on the depth of the division, but Id say winning over a top 5 fighter decisively should earn you a spot in a "next-in-line" matchup. That would ensure that every fighter has fought at least 2 "top-5's" before contending for a title.

For a shallow division (HW sort of currently, womens..) everything is kind of up in the air unfortunately. I would say a very big win (knockout, sub, completely dominating decision) over a top 5 could directly earn a challenger a title shot, but it would have to be pretty impressive.. like cain plowing bigfoot into paste impressive, or bj choking out pulver impressive.. brock vs heath herring.. Not saying those were top 5 guys defeated, just offering suggestions for what I consider "Impressive"

Of course, until we have some kind of official and widely accepted ranking system, its kind of a useless discussion.
