To help get Diaz ready, Melendez told MiddleEasy they have a plan in place involving Jake Shields.
“I’m sure if we get those two boys together, have Jake Shields on top of Nick Diaz all day and we work from there, I think we’re gonna have a really great chance,” said Melendez, shining a little light on the Graciefighter’s strategy.
Shields, a former Strikeforce champion, is a submission-specialist by trade, compiling ten tap-outs in his 27 victories with a number of notable wins to his credit like those over larger foes like Yushin Okami and Dan Henderson.
Melendez also responded to St-Pierre’s statements on lightweight champion Benson Henderson having provided a blueprint for beating the Diaz brothers when he dismantled Nate Diaz in a December title-defense, dismissing the French-Canadian’s comments as little more than a lame attempt at talking trash.
“I think he’s barking up the wrong tree there is all I gotta say,” added Melendez. “Everyone is a different fighter.”
