Invicta FC 6 bonuses: Penne, Nakamoto, Smith, Maia win awards
Jessica Penne, Miriam Nakamoto, Leslie Smith and Jennifer Maia each took home post-fight bonus awards for their performances at Saturday's Invicta FC 6 card.
Penne picked up the "Submission of the Night" bonus, Nakamoto won "Knockout of the Night," and Smith and Maia were awarded "Fight of the Night." Invicta officials announced the winners following the event, though bonus amounts were not released.
"Invicta FC 6: Cyborg vs. Coenen" took place at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Mo., and aired on pay-per-view. In the main event, Cristiane Santos stopped Marloes Coenen in the fourth round to win the featherweight title.
Penne (11-2), Invicta's former atomweight champ, made easy work of Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc (8-7), picking up a first-round submission in her first fight since losing the title to Michelle Waterson in April. With just three seconds left in the first round, Penne forced Rivera-Calanoc to tap to a rear-naked choke.
Nakamoto (2-0) stopped Duda Yankovich (2-1) with a brutal knee in the first round, then let loose with strikes to get the stoppage at the 2:08 mark of the frame. Nakamoto got a measure of revenge of sorts after having her first Invicta win overturned for an illegal strike.
Smith (6-3-1) fought for the first time at flyweight after dropping down from bantamweight and put on a slugfest with Maia (7-3-1) in a fight that likely pushed past an earlier bout between strawweights Tecia Torres and Rose Namajunas. After staying a little busier throughout the fight, Smith took a unanimous decision.
