A slow first round gave way to an emphatic finish as John Dodson secured his place as the No. 1 contender in the UFC flyweight division.
Facing former top ranked 125lb fighter Jussier “Formiga” Da Silva at UFC on FX 5, Dodson was gunning for a shot at newly crowned champion Demetrious Johnson, but knew he had a tall order in front of him before the title shot could happen.
Dodson and Da Silva spent the first five minutes in a feeling out process with neither fighter engaging much as the Minnesota crowd because a little restless as the minutes ticked away with less than stellar action inside the cage.
The second round changed all that as John Dodson pushed forward and found his range, launching ahead with power punches.
A quick strike dropped Da Silva midway through the round as Dodson pounced on him, but stayed cautious not to get stuck in the dangerous guard of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert.
Back on the feet it didn’t take long for Dodson to once again find an opening for his left hand on Da Silva’s chin, and that second one planted the Brazilian back on the mat.
Da Silva covered up with his face down on the mat, but Dodson unloaded with a flurry of punches as the referee swooped in for the save.
The knockout earns Dodson a win but more importantly gives him the first shot at new UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.
“It’s going to be the super fastest fight you’ve ever seen. It’s going to be kind of like lightning. You guys have this on DVR and please rewind it and watch it in slow motion,” Dodson said after the win.
The Team Jackson fighter will look to bring yet another title home to New Mexico when he faces Johnson likely in early 2013.
