UFC on FOX 5's Swick on Brown fight: 'It's going to be over fairly quick'

Despite a bonus-winning knockout in his most recent fight, Mike Swick feels he has something to make up for.

"The first round, to me, was embarrassing," Swick told MMAjunkie.com Radio (MMAjunkie.com).

So if his next opponent could, at some point, put him on the ground or provide him the opportunity to do the same, he would appreciate it.

That opponent is fellow welterweight Matt Brown (15-11 MMA, 8-5 UFC), whom Swick (15-4 MMA, 10-3 UFC) faces on the first FOX-televised fight of UFC on FOX 5, which takes place Saturday at KeyArena in Seattle. FX and Facebook carry the prelims.

The source of Swick's embarrassment is his grappling against DaMarques Johnson at UFC on FOX 4. Johnson took Swick's back, mounted him, and threatened with submissions, all while landing strikes.

In the second round, Swick rebounded in the biggest way possible, and he caught Johnson with a leaping punch and knocked him out cold. He won a $50,000 "Knockout of the Night" award for the ending.

Still, the American Kickboxing Academy fighter prides himself on his jiu-jitsu and wrestling, and he was caught off guard by the speed of the fight after two years on the bench due to injuries and illness.

"At least now going into Seattle, I know what to expect because I just went through it," he said. "It wasn't as hard to get adjusted as I thought, even though in the beginning, it was a bit overwhelming."

What Swick didn't advertise was that he was also hobbled by a torn ACL, which he fought on despite its condition. In training camp, he couldn't straighten his leg or build its strength.

"I work so hard on my ground ... so I'm definitely going to show a better version of that in this fight," he said. "Hopefully, this fight will hit every area so I can showcase a little bit better in some of the areas where I felt, in the first fight, wasn't the best of my abilities."

The problem is, Swick doesn't exactly see three three rounds of jiu-jitsu in store for them. Brown is an aggressive fighter who likes to strike and draw his opponents into slugfests. He isn't much different in that he likes to stay on his feet; he has stopped four of his UFC opponents via knockout or TKO and twice won "KO of the Night" honors.

Someone is going down, he predicts.

"I honestly think that we're going to clash, and it's going to be over fairly quick," Swick said. "I just can't imagine that we would punch each other in the face for three solid rounds without anything happening."

A quick fight could help him avoid the types of bumps and bruises that have so greatly hindered his career. It might not do the same for the one to his ego, but you never know.

"If it goes to the later rounds, which I'm prepared for considering he is a tough guy and likes to get in those long fights, I should be more than ready to keep a fast and explosive pace for those three rounds," Swick said.

*Should be a fun fight. Lets hope Swick schools Brown.

I concur, I've seen Brown crash and burn too many times and Swick has too much precision in areas that will give Brown trouble. I think Swick has another good showing as he builds himself back up.

I think it will be a very exciting fight but I think it will be quick. Brown seems to have a bit of a suspect chin, I think swick get the ko late first/early second.

I think Swick takes it, but he better not be taking Brown lightly, dude comes to fight every single time.
