Default Veteran MMA ref Josh Rosenthal cops plea, awaits sentencing in marijuana case

Veteran MMA referee Josh Rosenthal awaits sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana and possession with intent to distribute.

One year ago, federal agents raided an Oakland, Calif., warehouse owned by Rosenthal and an associate that contained 1,356 marijuana plants, according to a copy of the agreement, which MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps) obtained from the U.S. District Attorney's office in Oakland.

The drug's street value was estimated at more than $6 million.

Rosenthal is due in U.S. District Court on May 17. The government is recommending 37 months in jail, fines and five years of probation, during which he would be subject to random searches, according to the agreement. Without a deal, he faced 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine and a minimum of five years' probation.

However, the court ultimately will decide Rosenthal's sentence.

Rosenthal, who agreed to a plea deal in January, did not respond to request for comment. His lawyer of record, Ted W. Cassman, was unavailable for comment.

A jiu-jitsu practitioner and martial artist, Rosenthal has officiated dozens of high-profile bouts in the UFC, including a heavyweight title fight at UFC 116 between then-champ Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. The Nevada State Athletic Commission chose Rosenthal after Lesnar and UFC officials objected to veteran ref Steve Mazzagatti getting the assignment.

After the fight, UFC President Dana White praised Rosenthal's restraint in the bout's first round, when Carwin unleashed a flurry of punches upon the downed Lesnar. The now-retired Lesnar went on to win the bout via second-round submission.

As of late, Rosenthal has been conspicuously absent from major MMA events. Earlier this month, he gave an interview to website BloodyElbow.com in which he said his absence was the result of a staph infection. He said he would be officiating an event in May and made no mention of legal trouble.

only in america can 1000+ plants be worth 6 million dollars. That number is WAYYYYYYYYY to high.

Also explains where Rosenthal has been lately, one of the better refs in the business thats forsure.

Canada: Total Of 1,122 plants seized by means of helicopter surveillance. Drug squad officers in an RCMP helicopter were flying over Cape Breton this week in an operation aimed at nipping marijuana grow-ops in the bud. The RCMP officers found several grow-ops where 1,122 plants were seized. Const. Kal George said the aim of the marijuana eradication program is to get rid of the illegal drug at source before it hits the street. There are probably many other grow-ops in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, he said. "That's probably not even half of what is out there," he said. "It's such a big area to cover. "There is a pretty big market for marijuana everywhere." Drug squad officers are still doing investigations of the drugs seized that may result in charges, he said. Some of the marijuana plants were found on more remote land but others were in backyards in suburban areas, he said, while refusing to identify any of the exact locations. George said the drug squad was following up intelligence and reports to Crime Stoppers as well as conducting a general surveillance of likely areas of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Marijuana grow operations are typically located near a water supply, he noted. "We search in those areas . . . good growing areas." The average marijuana plant is probably worth about $1,000, he said.

Law enforcement always inflates the estimate street value of a drug to make the bust sound more impressive and justify all the money being spent on fighting the war on drugs.

The GOV always over-Valuates drugs in criminal cases for print impact value (holy shit 6 million!!) and procedural impact in court with a jury and or a judge.

Remember the cops weigh the dirt and the container when make a street value assessment. Much more likely that this is worth around 1-2m. Still a lotta green.

Ok now let's turn this into a debate about if marihuana should be legal or not, if it is a drug or a medicine, if it should be allowed by the comissions or not, if it is a PED or not, etc etc etc.
Not only brazilians can do this stuff
