Default Roy Nelson to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in possible 6-fight main card

Roy Nelson to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 in possible 6-fight main card

UFC Heavyweight Roy Nelson is coming off one of the biggest wins of his career. Just a few weeks ago, he scored a first round knockout over gatekeeper Cheick Kongo at UFC 159. Then, when it looked like Mark Hunt may miss his fight at UFC 160, the UFC looked first at "Big Country" as a replacement. With Hunt's visa problems now in order, they want to slot him in on the following PPV card.

UPDATE: MMA Junkie confirmed that Nelson is set to face Stipe Miocic at UFC 161 on June 15:

USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie.com (UFC blog for UFC news, UFC rumors, fighter interviews and event previews/recaps) today confirmed with UFC President Dana White that Nelson and Miocic have agreed to meet on the main card of the event, which takes place June 15 at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Rashad Evans (17-3-1 MMA, 12-3-1 UFC) vs. Dan Henderson (29-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) now headlines the card.

Miocic had been expected to face Australian heavyweight Soa Palelei (18-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), who is now left without an opponent. Palelei will now serve as a backup opponent should any injuries disrupt UFC 161's heavyweight bouts of Nelson vs. Miocic or Pat Barry vs. Shawn Jordan.

i'm not sure if I like this fight. ufc should've made nelson vs. Barnett instead and the winner just one fight away from title shot, but that's just my opinion.
I wonder who Barnett's going to fight, soa palelei perhaps??

Doesn't seem like a good matchup for miocic. Taking Roy in this one. Should be entertaining.

One of the losers this weekend probably.

I can't believe they'd bury Miocic like that. Guy has a ton of potential, but getting KOed by Struve then Nelson...not exactly how you mold a young prospect.

I agree. Hopefully they reward him with a gimee after this one. Props to stipe for not backing down. I agree that he has a ton of potential. Hopefully this doesn't kill that potential.

Bad matchmaking here. Stipe is a huge step down for Roy.

Should of been Roy vs Barnett unless they give Barnett a gimmie.

I too was confused by the matchmaking. I like Stipe, but my first thought was that Zuffa has finally accepted giving Roy a title shot and is grooming him for another highlight reel KO to sell the next fight. But then I stumbled across this tweet from Jeremy Botter (BleacherReport) that may shed light on the curious matchmaking:

Looks like they had some difficulty in finding him an opponent. Still hope they can make Hunt vs Nelson at some point.

Hmmm, what top 10 HW that isn't booked turned Roy down?
