Default Dominick Cruz on Renan Barao: “I Can Trick Him Out In A Lot of Different Ways”

    http://www.mmaweekly.com/dominick-cr...different-ways

“I’m a mixed martial artist. I can fight with him anywhere,” Cruz said during the UFC 165 Post Show on Fox Sports 2.

“I look at it as a chess match, literally. Renan Barao plays chess when he’s in there. I play chess when I’m there,” sad the bantamweight champion.

Cruz sees Barao as the best fighter competing in the 135-pound division aside from him. He realizes Barao’s 30-fight winning streak is no fluke and speaks highly of the interim titleholder.

“The most impressive part about Barao is the way that he mixes things up. He’s constantly shooting, kneeing up the middle, left hook, straight right hand and spinning back kicks,” said Cruz.

“My favorite thing that he does is he’ll throw the right hand and he’ll throw the left hook just to see you react,” explained Cruz.

“If he keeps landing the right hand than you don’t want to circle into the power of the right hand. So what does he do? When you go to the weak side he throws a spinning back kick. So now you have two power shots that he can land going right or left if you’re trying to defend against Renan Barao’s offense,” he added.
“Barao mixes it up better than anybody in the division.,” he said. “That’s what I’m looking forward to fighting. I’m looking forward fighting a guy that mixes things up from head to toe, whether it be wrestling, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, boxing,” he added. “I’m ready for that. I will be ready for that, and I cannot wait.”

“I think that can challenge that,” continued Cruz. “I know that I can beat him. I know that I have the tools to challenge him and really trick him out in a lot of different ways with the things that I do in a fight.”

The 28-year-old athlete hasn’t’ been medically cleared to fully train, but expects a medical clearance in the coming weeks.

“I will be cleared, and I will fight, and when I fight I will be fighting Renan Barao,” he said.

Ring rust is going to be the deciding factor when these two eventually fight. That, or lasting after-effects of Cruz's injuries. Its unfortunate. I would have loved to see this fight pre-injury bug.

I think Cruz will be ready for Barao but I am a huge Cruz mark. The guy is gym rat and I do not think ring rust will be that big of an issue for him.

Barao is a great fighter but Cruz is a different monster than anyone he has faced. A lot of this is because their is pretty much no one like Cruz in all of MMA. He comes from a lot of different angles and mixes his strikes very well. On top of the fact he has great wrestling to mix in takedowns. He is one part Machida and one part GSP, that is a very very tough fighter to game plan for.

Cruz has certainly tricked the UFC in many ways concerning his return so I would agree that he is a tricky fellow. I'm not saying he has been dishonest with the UFC, but I don't (hope to) see another situation where another champ could carry the strap and be inactive for so long. It is crazy that he has been out for so long and still has the authority to call himself the champ. I have always been a Cruz mark but taking Baroa as his first fight back isn't a wise decision in my opinion. Baroa is a beast and I have to say that my money would be on him in this one, if it ever happens anyway! But I am very anxious to see it and won't count Cruz out.

He is by far the least hit champion, something along the lines of only 21% of his opponents strikes land, and he has a takedown accuracy of around 60-70. Sorry if you have forgotten just how good Cruz really is. But as far as match-ups go the guy is an utter nightmare for anyone.

I liked that Dominick recognized Barao as a top-level fighter in the division. Sometimes it comes across like a back-handed compliment or disingenuous when some say things about their opponent, but I didn't get that at all from Cruz.

Renan Barao should be considered the undisputed bantamweight champion due to the length of Cruz's absence. When Cruz comes back if he wanted to take him on in an unofficial champion vs. champion match, that would be great. If for some reason he wanted a fight as a way to shake off ring rust, I wouldn't blame him at all.

The likely scenario is Cruz takes on Barao to unify the titles, and my pick would be Barao via close decision. Cruz will be motivated as hell to get back in there, but I think inactivity slows him down just enough.

If Cruz does win though the glaringly obvious choice would be the trilogy fight with Faber. And I'd actually like to see that fight regardless of Cruz winning or losing.
