Default Crazy union complains after lesbian and gay center honors UFC

And now the union is extending its anti-MMA effforts to complaining that a local gay and lesbian community center is honoring the UFC.

The union often creates a fictitious anti-MMA organization that purports to do good, while their real intention is to unionize a casino chain, where the workers don't want to unionize. Thus this time the complaints are not coming from the United Allied Group of LGBTQQIA Patriots Against Violence and Cat Juggling, but rather from the union itself.

Yesenia Amaro from the Las Vegas Review Journal has the story.

Last spring, the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada recognized the UFC as its corporation of the year.

In a letter dated Sept. 16, the Culinary union told the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada’s Board of Directors that it’s “alarmed that the Center is honoring the Ultimate Fighting Championship as the corporation of the year.”

“Not only are the owners of the UFC embroiled in a bitter labor dispute with the Culinary Union over casino properties, Station Casinos, which provides no benefits to domestic partners through their 2013 health plan, but the UFC has a history of tolerating offensive comments by fighters and company representatives, including anti-gay and misogynistic remarks,” the letter says.

Ryan Marquardt, spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada, said the UFC donated about $200,000 to the center in early 2012. The award by the center to the UFC was presented in late April or early May of this year.

The center will not reconsider rescinding its recognition of the UFC, he said Monday.

Raymond Wilmer, president of the center’s board of directors, said in a statement that “the partnership between the center and UFC is unlike any other joint effort” they have.

“From the outset of our partnership, the participation by UFC in the life of the center has been about more than just funding,” he said. “They have had an impressive presence at significant events, and they have ensured that this participation has been inclusive and has included the highest level of leadership of UFC. The center, in turn, has committed ourselves to supporting UFC’s long-standing efforts to ensure that their operation is fully supportive of equality and the LGBT community.”

You must admit that the union has a point here.......

Dfw and ufc in General have a bit of a history of misogyny and intolerance of homosexuals.

Whether they have a point or not, if I was a member of this union and this is what they spent my union dues on I would be angry.

I wonder if they get any backlash from their members?

    Writing letters?

Come on, man. They're trying to unionize station casinos and both sides have used some pretty shitty tactics.

I would personally be outraged. I'm a member of teamsters and a couple years ago I found out that my union was lobbying the government for gun control. Myself and my coworkers were pretty pissed off. Unions shouldn't be lobbying for frivolous things unless it is put to a vote.

Even if there is no love there undeniable that what the UFC has down for this particular group is extremely beneficial to them.

Just me but if you are fighting to get your union in somewhere that you truly figure it belongs then take the fight there... waste of time and it comes off as nothing but petty to try and target a company that's not directly involved in things. All the union accomplishes here is pissing people off and makes them want to fight back even more. No one is going to cave into the union and their pressure tatics in this case...

Probably I have missed something, but what exactly has the UFC done for LBGT aside of saying that they support them?

I'm not sure what the issue here is. Dana is a bonfide mysogynist with who uses LGBT terms either in a derogatory sense or simply as insults. Multiple instances of fighters saying anti-LGBT statements without repercussions. Mitrione blasted Fallon Fox is the last one I can remember and they simply suspended him until it was time for him to fight anyways.

I don't see how the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada has any real credibility here. But if you donate $200,000 you too can be honored by them regardless of your past. Seems like a good deal to me.
Hating on Anderson Silva before it was the cool thing to do.

The idea of a "true number one contender" is the stupidiest MMA idea to be perpetuated by fans and media, EVER.

HATES the new MMANEWS forum. Bring back the dark background.
