MMA Fighter Dies Moments Before Shooto’s Weigh-Ins in Brazil

Tragedy has struck the Brazilian MMA community.

MMA fighter Leandro "Feijao" Souza (1-1), a member of Nova Uniao and Delfim Cacadores, died on Thursday while cutting weight for Friday's Shoot Brazil 43 card in Rio de Janeiro. Feijao, who was slated to fight Gabriel Brasil (1-1) in flyweight action, was cutting the final pounds for the official weigh-ins when he passed out, and his death was confirmed moments later.

"We are sad to report the death of Leandro Caetano de Souza," Shooto president Andre Pederneiras wrote on his Facebook page. "The athlete has passed away in Botafogo’s UPA. We don’t know the reasons why yet. We would like to express our condolences to all friends and family."

MMAFighting.com confirmed the news with Shooto officials, but there is still no information on the cause of the death.

"He passed out before the weigh-ins and was taken to the hospital," Feijao’s teammate Andre Santos posted on his Facebook account today. "I don’t know the cause of his death yet."
Very sad and disturbing. I hope they can identify what went wrong.

Maybe it's me, but shouldn't this push more support for same-day weigh-ins? I'm assuming that since it isn't in the states it won't generate much coverage stateside, which is a shame.

Obviously not sure what caused his passing, but for these guys to risk it all just to carry a few extra pounds in the cage on fight day seems ridiculous to me.

Thoughts go out to his family, should have never happened.

I don't know. Guys will still cut and then hydrate right before the fight.

That may be even MORE dangerous.
And the piano, it sounds like a carnival
And the microphone smells like a beer

Agreed they'd need to make the weigh ins just prior to the bout for that that to really work.

I wonder if he suffered from any ailment(s) that contributed to his death...

Fuck, this is sad to hear.

Wow, this is terrible news. Anyone know how much weight he was trying to cut?

    Very sad.

Hydration is such a dangerous thing to play with.

Weigh-in's just before the fight is a great idea but a logistical nightmare.

One fighter doesnt make weight and that fights cut on no notice to the audience.

That being said, im all for it. People would fight at their TRUE weight.

I think they would have to make the penalties really severe for missing weight..

Things like 10% of your purse for every pound over up to the point of loss of contract/termination or suspensions for coming in severely over weight. Put the onus on the fighters to show up at a weight they know they are healthy and ready to fight at there should be relatively no issues because the fighters want to get paid.
