Thread: Alessio Sakara possibly retiring following first round submission loss

I think the Cote fight is what's saving Sakara right now.

If Okami and Fitch are gone, Sakara should follow. But he won't.

    Everyone loves a highlight reel.

The Curious Case of Alessio Sakara

To say he's had a weird run in the UFC would be an understatement. I just started to look back on his MMA career since joining the UFC and it's pretty amazing to see everything laid out.

    Fights with odd endings
Vs. Ron Faircloth NC due to groin kick
Vs. James Irvin TKO. Confusion as to the punch thrown.
Vs. Patrick Cote DQ due to back of the head strikes.

Fights with multiple fighter changes that made it to fight night.
    Vs. Maiquel Falcao. Falcao injured
Replaced Vs. Rafeal Natal. Natal injured
    Replaced Vs. Chris Weidman.
    Sakara loss

    Vs. Tom Watson. Watson injured.
Replaced Vs. Magnus Cedenblad. MC injured.
    Replaced Vs. Nicholas Musoke.
    Sakara loss

    Fights that Sakara didn't make.
    Vs. Palhares. Sakara injury.
Vs. Marquardt. Sakara Death of father.
    Vs. Rivera. Rivera injury
Replaced. Vs. Gerald Wallace. Sakara injury.
    Vs. Rivera. Sakara Sickness
    Vs. Rivera. Sakara injury.
    Vs. Cote II. Sakara injury.

Assuming he loses his next fight, that would be a 5 fight losing streak. If he feels he needs to retire after this match, I'd think he believes he's just going to lose another fight, and then retire. Him retiring now avoids a 5 fight losing streak. I guess I didn't spell that all out, but that was what I was saying.

Not that it really matters. Three losses in a row is a lot in this sport, let alone 4 or 5. If he wants to retire, that's up to him.

Fitch and Okami were fighting top 5 competition while Sakara was fighting...? Musoke?!

The top organization should strive towards retention of top level talent. There's no way to legitimize such actions. Smells of money grubbing, egotism and arrogance. Fitch was due to a bad relationship with Dana White. Okami was due to his fighting style. Regardless, both men were ranked within the top 10 upon being released. There was no reasonable precursor to their ejection. Were they nobodies just coming up or gatekeepers fighting unranked people, it would be fine.

Sakara isn't clogging up title plans. Sakara isn't beating their hot up and comers. Sakara isn't getting paid like they are. Sakara isn't taking up a main event spot. Sakara isn't battling the bosses.

Insert any other fighter that stuck around longer than they should and that's the reasons why. Yow know that.
Of course I can see the reasoning. Doesn't mean that I have to agree it is ideal.

I remember watching Sakara way back in the beginning of his ufc career. I always liked watching him fight and I agree that he is an interesting guy/fighter.

Wipes his blood on the ref, haha.
