Thread: Rory Macdonald vs Demian Maia set for UFC 170

  1. Default Rory Macdonald vs Demian Maia set for UFC 170

    http://fiveouncesofpain.com/2013/12/...et-at-ufc-170/

A pair of welterweights looking to get back on track will meet in February at UFC 170, as Rory MacDonald squares off with Demian Maia.

The card is scheduled for February 22 from Las Vegas. The main event is expected to feature Daniel Cormier and Rashad Evans.

MacDonald (15-1) had his five-fight win streak snapped by Robbie Lawler this past November, dropping a split decision. The Tristar Gym fighter had topped Jake Ellenberger, BJ Penn and Nate Diaz during his win streak.

Maia (18-5) was defeated – also via split decision – by Jake Shields in October. That loss snapped a three-fight win streak for the former No. 1 middleweight contender.

The bout was first reported by the UFC Canada Twitter account.

Agreed. I'm sort of hoping to see something similar to Maia vs. Story or Kim.

I'm rooting for Maia, but I think this will another jabfest by the faster Rory. His wrestling is probably good enough to avoid the takedown.

    Come on Maia!

I hope he utilizes his jiu jitsu, especially if Rory gets him down. I also hope he uses good head movement and doesn't get jabfucked for the duration of the fight.

Here comes the downslide of Rory Mac's career.

MacDonald (15-1) had his five-fight win streak snapped by Robbie Lawler this past November, dropping a split decision. The Tristar Gym fighter had topped Jake Ellenberger, BJ Penn and Nate Diaz during his win streak.

I'm taking Maia for this one, and I think he'll get the finish, too. I don't think Maia will want any part of the stand-up game and will look to close the distance and pressure MacDonald from the start.

If MacDonald can't keep Maia on the outside, I think Maia has enough tricks up his sleeve to get MacD down. Maia has pulled off some unorthodox takedowns/trips, and shouldn't be giving up much (if any) size to Rory in this fight.

As for on the ground, Maia is tight, technical and aggressive, and it won't take much of a mistake on Rory's part to give Maia the opening he needs.

    Maia by second round sub.
