UFC on FOX 9 draws reported 11,573 attendance for $1,066,610 live gate

Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 9 event drew an announced attendance of 11,573 and a live gate of $1,066,610.

UFC President Dana White announced the figures at the night’s post-event news conference, which MMAjunkie attended.
Dana White calls Cody McKenzie’s fight shorts ‘UFC amateur hour’

“What that was is UFC amateur hour,” spat White at the event’s post-fight press conference at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena.

White said the UFC usually checks fighters and their attire before sending them out to the octagon. But apparently there was a breakdown in procedure, and that allowed McKenzie (14-4 MMA, 3-4 UFC) to enter the cage with his freshly purchased attire, which looked more suited for a basketball game than an MMA fight with Stout (20-9-1 MA, 9-8 UFC).

Mid-fight, referee Herb Dean spotted the tag and yanked it off.

“We have a guy backstage who policies all the things when you got a guy going out there,” White said. “First of all, if it’s not bad enough that he’s out there with basketball shorts on, how about he’s got the price tag still on the shorts during the fight?

    “So, it’s pretty embarrassing.”

Despite his strong reaction, White didn’t find it all that surprising that McKenzie wore those kind of shorts to the cage instead of MMA apparel, nor was he shocked at a reporter’s inquiry as to whether the fighter didn’t have a mouthpiece and needed to borrow one to fight Stout. (McKenzie reportedly left his fight attire in his hotel room and didn’t have time to retrieve it.)

The fact that his staff didn’t catch the issues in time was what irked White.

“It was one of the weirdest things I’ve ever seen, and it’s even weirder that we let it happen,” he said. “Didn’t we have this conversation once? This is like deja vu. Maybe he was going to fight in his jeans and thought he should get some shorts. I don’t know, man.

“Cody McKenzie’s a strange dude. But it’s not Cody’s fault that that happened tonight. That’s the UFC’s vault. We’re here for a show on FOX, and it’s pretty damn embarrassing.”

For his part, Stout found the episode somewhat amusing and thanked Dean for acting quickly. In the end, McKenzie was unanimously outpointed on the judges’ scorecards.

    White, however, wasn’t as forgiving.

“I don’t even know what to say,” he said. “We’re stupid. I was pissed.”

Lol at McKenzie. Me and my friends were commenting on his shorts looking out of place. None of us noticed the price tag though. I'd love to hear the story of how he had time to go buy shorts but no time to get his equipment.

It also seems like McDonald is a bit underpaid, but that type of stuff is pretty common in these threads.
