Default Sonnen Confirms he had Colon Surgery Prior to UFC 167

    http://www.tsn.ca/mma/story/?id=439311

UFC fighter Chael Sonnen had several inches of his colon removed during emergency surgery on Nov. 15 - one day before his first-round loss to Rashad Evans at UFC 167.

Sonnen confirmed that he had the procedure during a taping of TSN's Off The Record on Wednesday, after host Michael Landsberg revealed that a source told him about it.

"It's a little bit of a surprise that you had that information," replied Sonnen when asked whether he had undergone surgery.

Despite the medical emergency, Sonnen did not withdraw from the scheduled matchup in Las Vegas on Nov. 16 and was defeated in a first-round TKO.

"When I sign a contract to fight, I'm agreeing to fight a guy on a certain day at a certain time and in a certain venue," he continued. "It's my job to feel good when I go out and do it and if I don't that may play a hand in the fight."

Landsberg's full interview with Sonnen will air Wednesday at 5pm et/2pm pt on TSN.

Holy fuck. If this is true, I don't know how the athletic commission could have missed this and let this happen. I think him going on with the fight despite having part of his colon removed is both incredibly stupid and ballsy. One thing is for sure though, Chael Sonnen is tough as hell.

EDIT: I just watched part of the interview, and Chael didn't come out right and say that he had the surgery. He didn't confirm that this is true but I can't wait to see the rest of the interview tonight. If the mods want to Noobjack this story for now, that's cool but I'm very interested in seeing how this develops.

Many things come out of Sonnens mouth. So I'll need a little more than his word to believe it.

It was actually the guy interviewing him that brought it up.

100% not true in the least. I have two family members that have had their colon's sectioned due to diverticulitis and it was days before they could sit up and walk. I can't see any scenario where this is accurate

Exactly. Unless the day of the surgery was incorrect, and occurred much earlier, there's no way in hell he would have even been medically cleared to fight the next day. Even if he kept it quiet from the commission, there absolutely has to be some trace of the anesthetic is his system, and likely pain killers as well. He would have been popped for sure. Certainly if he mentioned those things being in his system, he'd be required to provide a note from his doctor, explaining why he needed them.

Even though Sonnen looked like shit, I dont think he had surgery one day prior to his Rashad fight. A surgery of that nature would have Sonnen out for a few days at absolute minimum.

Let's not forget, the weigh ins were held on Nov 15th... Does this look like a man who just had surgery a couple hours previous?

I think they meant 1 day after UFC 167 due to Rashad throwing him face down and pounding the fuck out of him.

I'm calling BS on this, though I'm not sure what the angle is yet. The thought of having a debilitating surgery before a fight is so absurd, Sonnen would go along with it just to see how long he could keep it up.
