Dana White not willing to let boxing die, ready to 'make something out of it'

If boxing promoter Don King can promote the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), then there is no reason Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White can't promote the "sweet science."

He'll get his start with "The Fighters," the new boxing reality show from the streets of Boston that debuts this Thursday night (Jan. 23, 2014) at 9 p.m. ET on Discovery Channel (see the video teaser here). And if his latest foray into the world of pugilists doesn't scratch his itch for the ring?

White tells FOX Sports he's ready for more.

"There is nothing but fucking characters in boxing. Boston is an exciting place for this. The accent alone speaks boxing. It's a very unique, interesting world and this is a look into it. I've always got the boxing itch. I'm a boxing guy at heart. I'm always going to be that guy. How deep would I get? Let's see how far this thing goes. I don't want to see the sport of boxing die. This is my contribution to the sport I love. I think I can make something out of it."

If boxing is nothing but characters, then White would fit right in.

    ^ Yup.

Honestly, I've seen the commercials for a few weeks now. Had no idea that Dana had anything to do with it until reading this.

Great, because listening to all his BS in MMA was not enough....

Why can't he take a permanent vacation and disappear in some remote island?
Not only brazilians can do this stuff

Hating absolutely everything about Dana aside, does anyone else have a problem with the mainstream face of mma having a raging mega huge boner for one branch of martial arts? If not, try watching TUF, and listen to him shit on wrestling based fighters.

I'm not so sure. It will be good for those who would like to have a unique avenue to watch boxing, but it remains to be seen if this is a good business decision for Dana or not. Business owners have to be willing to gamble to be successful, no question. But this is a huge endeavor that will take time away from what his number one priority "should be" and that is the UFC. There is a saying in business that states "grow or die", but it is not the norm for a business to attempt to grow very far out of their specialty area as it is inherently dangerous to the business. The real risk is a business loosing focus of their bread and butter while it suffers trying to get a new concept off of the ground. I'm sure that UFC management has analyzed this risk and have agreed to move forward with it. But there are many companies that came to the same conclusion and ultimately lost huge amounts of money and worse due to an over aggressive plan.

I am also hoping not to have to see a MMA/boxing event, a circumstance that I see Dana and Co. attempting if this show gets some ratings. While this may help garner attention to MMA from an amount of boxing fans, I want the option of watching MMA when I want to watch MMA, and boxing when I want to watch boxing. Promoting both on the same card only takes up time on the card that I would prefer to see up and coming or mid tier MMA talent.

Ha, he never had me fooled for a minute. I always knew he was a "boxing guy at heart". I wish him luck because the politics in boxing is just ridiculous, not that MMA can really say it's much better though.....

"I don't call the fighting in my films 'violent', I call it 'action'. An action film borders between fantasy and reality. If I were to be completely realistic in my films, you would call me a violent, bloody man. I would simply destroy my opponent by tearing his guts out. I wouldn't do it so artistically." ~Bruce Lee
