Severe injury scratches 'TUF 18' winner Julianna Pena from UFC 171, Sarah Kaufman volunteers to step up

“The Ultimate Fighter 18″ winner Julianna Pena (5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) sustained “a very severe knee injury,” according to a rep from her training camp, and will be unable to fight Brazilian Jessica Andrade (10-3 MMA, 1-1 UFC) at UFC 171.

The rep, who asked for anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the matter, told MMAjunkie the injury occurred “a couple of days ago” and said Pena is headed to Los Angeles for surgery with a UFC-recommended specialist.

The rep shot down a rumor that Pena was pregnant and was forced to forgo the fight, which was set for the March 15 pay-per-view event at Dallas’ American Airlines Center.

A UFC official told MMAjunkie that the search for a replacement opponent is underway. One volunteer already has made herself known: Sarah Kaufman. The former Strikeforce champ today tweeted “Please … With Pena out I want in at #ufc171! Back to Texas and this time judges won’t be able to get it wrong.”

Kaufman is referring to her most recent fight, which ended in a split decision loss to fellow UFC newcomer Jessica Eye. The 28-year-old Canadian holds wins over UFC vets Alexis Davis, Liz Carmouche, Roxanne Modaferri and Miesha Tate.

So DFW says hes "disgusted" by her gym basically because Pena was training with men. Ive been a DW supporter for a long time, but as of late hes coming from a completely different universe with this shit.

Fighters / gyms hes trashed as of late / reporters:

    - Roy Nelson and his application for NSAC
    - GSP x100
    - Pena's camp
    - Beefing with Ariel Helwani and wouldnt allow him access to pre-fight media scrum or weigh ins. Hi Colt Cabana! *(rumor being because he did something for bellator open workouts)
    - Benson Henderson

^ and this is all in the last week!!

Meltzer was talking about the degree of Pena's injury and her career might very well be over.

Dana will talk about it more in-depth at the presser today, but from what I've heard, it wasn't a matter of her simply training with men, but of somebody beating the shit out of her in training on purpose and potentially ruining her career(completely torn ACL, MCL, LCL and hamstring), with Meltzer saying the talk is around a two year layoff, but in reality, the injury is one of the worst they've ever seen and she may not be back ever. She can't even have surgery on it yet since it's so fucked up, worse than the Silva injury.

    Dana's in the right here.

Maybe this is a case of he said she said and either of us could be right but from what i gathered from Ariel's twitter account was that Pena trains 3 times a day and jumped right into a high intensity session with minimal warmup which is partially to blame for her injury. I also read she came back from blowing out her other knee as well as a car accident so she knows what it takes to get back to the top...

Dana White reacts to Julianna Pena's 'disgusting' knee injury, tells 'Venezuelan Vixen' to leave her gym following two-year timeout
And according to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White, the recovery process could cost her two years of her budding mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

He had a little message regarding her future:

What happened to @VenezuelanVixen at "her gym" is the most disgusting thing I have ever heard. Ranked #10 out for 2 years. #leavethatgymnow
    — Dana White (@danawhite) January 30, 2014

How disgusting? Pena suffered tears in her ACL, MCL, LCL, meniscus and hamstring.
Pena is a member of Team "Sikjitsu" in Spokane, Wash., and while fight fans are left guessing what White is insinuating by his cryptic Tweet, deductive reasoning suggests that something must have gone terribly wrong at the gym for "The Venezuelan Vixen" for her to tear just about everything inside her knee.

UFC lightweight Michael Chiesa, who trains with the 24-year-old The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 18 winner, wanted to remove his name from any brewing controversy, thus adding to the question of how the injury actually happened.

    @danawhite @VenezuelanVixen I hope you don't think I have any fault in this....#notguilty
    — Michael Chiesa (@MikeMav22) January 30, 2014

In addition, Team Sikjitsu coach Rick Little sent White a response on Twitter:

@danawhite that gym handed u 2 ultimate fighters raised from teenagers created from scratch, there is a reason she destroyed evry1 in UFC
    — Rick Little (@SIKJITSU) January 30, 2014

Pena was apparently the victim of her own enthusiasm, training three times a day and jumping into a mid-day grappling session without properly warming up. How that translated into a mangled knee is unclear at this time, but expect more facts to surface in the coming days.

I don't know how you can torch your knee like that from just "not warming up properly"

That's what I like to see.
Hopefully she's more active in her striking this time. You can tell she can bang, but she's almost TOO Much of a counter puncher.

Just saying, but I'd take Meltzer's word over Ariel's 10 times out of 10....

Also, I've been hearing that Ariel has heat with FOX and MAYBE ZUFFA because of his coverage of a BFC presser.

He's a journalist, not a UFC public spokesman.
