UFC 171 weigh-in results: Johny Hendricks misses weight on first attempt

DALLAS -- Unless Johny Hendricks can make something happen, the UFC welterweight title may remain vacant for the foreseeable future.

Disaster struck UFC 171's main card Friday afternoon, as a visibly drained Hendricks missed weight by 1.5 pounds ahead of his championship fight against Robbie Lawler.

Hendricks, who weighed in gaunt and shaking on his first attempt, has two hours to meet required welterweight limit of 170 pounds.

Lawler successfully weighed-in at 170 pounds.

Main card (PPV at 10 p.m. ET)
Johny Hendricks (171.5) vs. Robbie Lawler (170)

Jake Shields (171) vs. Hector Lombard (170)
Ovince St. Preux (205) vs. Nikita Kyrlov (205)

Undercard (FOX Sports 2 at 8 p.m. ET)
Kevin Gastelum (172.5 - needs to lose 1.5 pounds) vs. Rick Story (170)
Raquel Pennington (135.5) vs. Jessica Andrade (135)
Dennis Bermudez (146) vs. Jimy Hettes (145.5)
Sean Spencer (170) vs. Alex Garcia (170.5)

Will Campuzano (125.5) vs. Justin Scoggins (125)

Wow Hendricks looked terrible. I always wondered what the UFC would do if a Champ or ,Challenger in this case with a vacant belt, misses weight.

I've always felt that if someone can't make weight they automatically forfeit the belt and it goes to their opponent. Certainly not how someone would want to win a title but as a real sport, thats what makes sense. In something like the Super Bowl, what if one of the teams can't dress enough players to start the game? it makes sense that their opponent, who could, is declared the victor.

    Interesting to say the least

apparently what's going to happen is if Hendrix can't make weight he forfeits the opportunity to win the title but Lawler if he wins would get the title

Wow. I wonder what happened to make the cut go wrong. Especially since he made it every other time I'm aware of. And of all times to have it happen...

Impressive. Thats exactly how I thought it SHOULD be handled, but never thought the UFC would do it.

Holy shit. I just watched the video- Hendricks' eyes looked so sunken and he was shaking horribly when trying to flex. It really seems like something is wrong.

I'm a big believer that the brain doesn't rehydrate as well or as quickly as people think; and that bad cuts take away from durability. Could be a big upset in the making!

I think its an athletic commission thing in Texas, but I could be wrong.

    Doesn't matter now though
