Following cancelation of Palhares vs. Fitch, WSOF executive issues warning to fighters

Abdel-Aziz told MMAFighting.com on Wednesday that due to personal reasons Rousimar Palhares has withdrawn from his welterweight title fight against Jon Fitch on July 5. Palhares' manager Alex Davis was not immediately available to discuss why Palhares had to pull out of the fight.

As a result, the new main event of WSOF 11 will be Justin Gaehtje vs. Nick Newell for the lightweight title. Abdel-Aziz added that the promotion is working towards booking Fitch vs. Jake Shields in the co-main event
So why has Abdel-Aziz had enough?

"We're getting screwed," he said. "I'm trying to put on a fight card and be nice to fighters, and now they dont want to fight each other.

"I have to put WSOF first and everyone else second. No more Mr. Nice Guy."
"I'm getting sick of this," he said. "If a fighter is not going to respect the promotion, he is going to be shelved for a long time. I will not release anyone to another promotion. Fighters must honor their contracts."
Wow, pretty crazy. Fitch vs Shields sounds like a more exciting fight (or more boring to some). but it's about damn time WSOF acted like a real promotion, rather than another feeder for the UFC.

Turning a negative into a positive right there.

Interesting take on this as of right now but if it was Rebney saying the same thing he'd be getting killed.

Maybe not a lot of people are gonna jump up to Palhares defense though when he gets called out like this though no matter who does it.

Somebody tell me if I'm wrong, but for a matchmaker, Abdel-Aziz sure talks quite a fair bit about his fighters(remember, he's not in the Dana role, but the Silva/Shelby role) and with the Burkmann situation, he didn't seem on the same page as Sefo....

I don't think that's quite true. Abdel-Aziz is often regarded as the WSOF decision maker and has been at the forefront on all of their major contract issues and signings.

All I can figure here is that Palhares has done something incredibly dumb or underhanded because Aziz has repeatedly preached "fighters first" and has shown it in his actions.

Granted, he's anything but a reliable source, but Palhares says that the comments weren't directed at him; that he pulled out due to a family illness.

I wouldn't be surprised if Aziz was lashing out at whoever he offered the fight to after Palhares pulled out.

Am I the only one who thinks Aziz may be over-reacting a bit here? Does anyone know the reason for Paul Harris pulling out? I can really only assume Aziz is reacting to information we dont yet have.

DAMN! I really wanted to see that fight FFS. WHY, PAUL HARRIS, WHY?

Fitch VS Shields is also something I have wanted to see for years.

Wait, what happened? When did Paul Harris pull out of the fight?
