Bellator 123 changes start time for head-to-head showdown with UFC Fight Night 50 on Sept. 5

Bellator 123 begins at 8 p.m. ET while the UFC Fight Night 50 main card airs one hour later at 9 p.m. ET.

Newport Beach, Calif. (August 11, 2014) - Bellator will kick-off its 11th season from Connecticut's Mohegan Sun Casino on Friday, September 5th at a special start time of 8:00pm ET/PT on Spike TV. Bellator 123 (8:00-10:00pm ET/PT) will be headlined by the Featherweight Title fight as reigning Bellator Champion Pat Curran defends his belt against Brazilian striker Patricio Pitbull. Tickets for the event are on sale now and can be purchased via TicketMaster.com: Bellator 123: Curran vs. Pitbull

The following week, Bellator will return to its 9:00-11:00pm ET/PT timeslot.

"MMA fans know that Friday nights are all about great Bellator action on Spike," noted Scott Coker, President, Bellator. "We have a huge night planned for September 5th, and wanted to give fans an opportunity to enjoy what should be a very fun night in Connecticut from Mohegan Sun Casino."

The night will also showcase Cheick Kongo, King Mo, the Bellator debut of Bobby Lashley and a full preliminary card.

Kicking off the Spike.com portion of the night will be a battle of heavy hands between Connecticut's own Josh Diekmann and Mike Wesssel. Riding a two-fight win streak, Diekmann has recorded all 14 of his victories by finish, but will put his skills to the test against Wessel, who has recorded eight KO wins, six coming in the first round.

Wow...thats just stupid. Going head to head with larger competition is never a smart business decision if you have an inferior product/inferior marketing.

I'm of course going to watch them both, but I'm more excited for the Overeem vs Rothwell fight than the entire Bellator card.
"I leave this as a declaration of intent, so no one will get confused. 1: Si vis pacum para bellum. Latin. If you want peace, prepare for war. 2: Frank Castle is dead. He died with his family. 3: In certain extreme situations, the law is inadequate. In order to shame its inadequacies, it is necessary to act outside the law. To pursue natural justice. This isn't vengeance. Revenge is not a valid motive, it's an emotional response. No, not vengeance. Punishment "

I think the article and title are a little misleading. Seems they are starting an hour earlier, so they don't directly go head-to-head with the UFC, at least when it comes to main events. UFC Prelims start at 7PM (ET), main card starts at 9pm, and will likely last until 11PM. So Bellator will get their entire card in, while giving MMA fans the opportunity to watch the UFC's main event as well as what other fights of that card fit into that extra hour. They simply could have stuck with their regular hours (9-11) and put their entire card/main event up against the UFC's. The only other option would be to reschedule the entire card, which would make Bellator and Spike look "weak". I think they made the intelligent decision.

Ya Spoon is right, Bellator was first to announce the date and UFC countered. Bellator is actively changing their time to avoid a head to head with UFC.

And here's the issues with Bellators tournament style or some of them anyway. Weichel is the latest FW tournament winner but since Curran got an unearned title shot (because titles are earned in Bellator...) Friere is up and Weichel still has to sit out even longer even though he earned his shot on May 9th. Granted Friere earned his shot Nov 15 last year. Curran lost to Straus Nov 2 and then won March 14. He's been out a long time and I can't remember why but that title shot was not earned. Thank god Bellator has amazing fights...goooooo Weichel!!!
    FW-Hominick, Weichel
    LW-Stout, Cerrone, Jim Miller
    WW-GSP, Fitch, Goulet, Rory
    MW-Shlemenko
    LHW-Jones
    HW-Carwin, Barry, Russow

    RRR=the Rhonda Rousey Resistance

Wow, two outstanding cards on the same night. This is the exact reason dvr was created. Pitbull vs curran will be amazing. The UFC card will be good from top to bottom. Chiesa vs Lauzon will probably be the one I look forwar to the most. War teen wolf or the caddy from happy gilmore!

This could be a bad move though, I could see Dana doing this more now that they backed down once.
    Gotta resolve the Gayness
