Default Enough with the big sigs

Since the site has become so big the past year and there are a shit load of new posters compared to a few years back, what do people think of limiting the size of signatures?

Some people really abuse the fact that there is no size limit and attach huge pictures or simply take up way too much space in text.

It would make the threads allot shorter, easier to read though, and faster to load.

I think the standard size forum sig that I (and allot of other people) am sporting is reasonable.

...oh and I almost forgot, how about limiting gif.s to only one per poster. Some people have several and it takes forever to load.

The sig size thing has become a problem. I have told quite a few posters over the last month to make the sig a little smaller. I mean, there is no reason why your gif/sig should be any taller than 320 pixels to begin with. Then, only a line or two of text is really necessary after that, IMO.

My rule of thumb is this, if your sig takes up the whole screen, it is way to big and the picture sized needs to be reduced or the text needs to be removed. If your sig takes 3/4ths of the screen, it still needs to be smaller.

If we are going to make a limit, I'd say limit it to two per poster.

Note: If you want to measure your sig length. Take the line above the sig and put it at the top, and see where the Edit and Quote buttons land on your screen.

The size on some wouldn't even be an issue but they have it verticle like a profile picture and it takes up 5 inches.

Some people clearly take the fact that there is no size limit too far, I mean when your sig is twice the size of anyone else's it's probably too big, you would think that was common sense but apparently it's not.

Filling sigs with gifs that slow things down is a bit of a problem too, but most people seem to know where to draw the line.

I suppose I have been guilty of this recently too, I'll try to remove my JZ sig soon.

I had sigs disabled a couple weeks ago. Didn't know it was possible till then and it has been great having them off. Sigs are only worth seeing like once or twice and thats for a select few people imo. Just have em turned off for the moment until they're fixed.

I've been a member of sites where sigs, gifs and custom avatars were kind of like an incentive system based on tenure or reputation and it really cut down on loading time. I know this would cause some tension, but it would help with the problem as it relates to really new members. I'm not trying to be a communist here or anything, just a thought.

Ideas?

I wouldn't mind some sort of earn your sigs idea (i.e. member for 60 days, 100+ rep, 100+ posts, etc.)

The size limit should be addressed. There are guys that have them too large, but those guys are at a minimum and the issue should be dealt with easily.

I'm not always on enough to be in every thread and to see everyone's sig.

If there are any doubts about a sig or if one is obviously too big, feel free to PM me. Oversized sigs are a personal pet peeve of mine, and I have no problem removing one and issuing a warning.

OK then... you're sig is too big. Take it down and give yourself a good punch to the balls.
