BREAK NEW GROUND IN SPANISH-LANGUAGE TELEVISION
World’s Leading Brand Of Mixed Martial Arts Events Makes Spanish-Language Debut; Series of Six One-Hour “Gladiadores del UFC” Specials to be Made Available for the First Time to Spanish-language Viewers on Fox Sports en Espaol
Newly Set Friday Night Fight Programming Block Now to Include Lucha Libre, Boxeo de Campeones, Kick Boxing, and “Gladiadores del UFC”
Los Angeles, CA — October 30, 2006 — Breaking new ground in U.S. Hispanic programming, Fox Sports en Espaol, the leading Spanish-language sports cable network and the second most-watched Spanish-language cable network overall, and the Ultimate Fighting Championship, today announced a historic agreement to bring the world’s leading brand of professional mixed martial arts sports events to Spanish-language television for the first time ever. The exclusive one-year deal includes Spanish-language television and video on demand rights to “Gladiadores del UFC,” a series of six one-hour UFC fight specials that will air over the course of six months.
“Gladiadores del UFC” joins Fox Sports en Espaol’s newly created, two-hour “Friday Fight Night” block that also includes “Lucha Libre,” “Boxeo de Campeones,” and “Kick Boxing.” Long-time UFC and Fox Sports en Espaol collaborator Tony Rivera and former boxer Genaro Hernndez will provide Spanish-language commentary for all “Gladiadores del UFC” telecasts.
Premiering on November 3 at 11:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. PT, the first episode of “Gladiadores del UFC” features the top fighters from the UFC's most competitive weight class, the welterweights. Former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn kicks things off with perhaps his most explosive performance ever when he faces Caol Uno in a bout from UFC 34 that took place back when 'The Prodigy' was tearing through the lightweight division. Next, Canada's Georges St. Pierre cements his number one contender status at UFC 56 when he squares off against current lightweight champion Sean Sherk, and then two of the division's young guns, Diego Sanchez and Nick Diaz, clash in a grudge match that lives up to all expectations. In the first episode's main event, UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes battles longtime rival Frank Trigg at UFC 52 in a bout many have dubbed the greatest welterweight match in mixed martial arts history.
“We are delighted to team up with UFC on this exciting new series,” said David Sternberg, executive vice president and general manager of Fox Sports en Espaol. “Our viewers are huge fans of combat sports and we are confident that `Gladiadores del UFC’ will be a very popular addition to our programming lineup.”
Each installment of “Gladiadores del UFC” will also be available to Hispanic digital cable subscribers throughout the United States as part of Comcast's On Demand en espaol service. Refreshing each month, UFC programming will be included among the 10 hours of video on demand programming Fox Sports en Espaol already offers. The service is available at no additional charge and is a companion VOD service that complements Comcast's CableLatino and Selecto Hispanic line-up.
“We are pleased to work with Fox Sports en Espaol to bring the Ultimate Fighting Championship to its millions of Spanish-language viewers around the country,” said Dana White, UFC President. “We are looking forward to launching `Gladiadores del UFC’ and to introducing the world’s most exciting brand of professional mixed martial arts — the UFC — to sport fans watching Fox Sports en Espaol.”
