UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones was involved in a car accident in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Sunday morning.

An initial report from MMAWeekly.com stated that Jones had been pulled from his upcoming title defense against Anthony “Rumble” Johnson on May 23rd at UFC 187. Chael Sonnen, who predicted the fight would never happen, tweeted:

MMAWeekly has since posted an update, clarifying that the bout has not been officially scrapped, but is in “in jeopardy” –

UPDATE: MMAWeekly.com’s source originally indicated that the fight was off, but once the story was public they retracted their statement. Instead, the source then said Jones was involved in a car accident and his UFC 187 bout with Anthony Johnson is in jeopardy.

The breaking news story later took a shocking twist, with tweets from MMA insiders @BloodstainLane and @FrontRowBrian. There rumors of Jones being involved in a hit and run, fleeing the scene, cocaine being found and Jones being “in custody.”

The perceived severity of the situation set of a firestorm on Twitter, with Jones trending. The 27-year-old champion got into trouble earlier this year after for testing positive for benzoylecgonine (the main metabolite of cocaine) in an out-of-competition drug test. He would later go on to check himself into rehab, only to check right back out just 24 hours later.

Jones did an interview with FOX Sports 1 denying having a drug addiction, despite mounting concern from the MMA community and fans around the world.
