UFC Light Heavyweight Champion says he’d “absolutely jump at the opportunity” to step in to the Octagon against UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman.
Back in February, Jones was asked about a potential fight against Weidman, but said he’d rather fight Cain Velasquez, because he didn’t think Weidman had enough star power to warrant the fight. During an interview with AXS TV, Jones said:
“A lot of people are starting to mention Chris Weidman’s name and I think in order for it to be a ‘super fight,’ Chris Weidman needs to get his name a little bit bigger and prove himself against some other world champions. That being said, I think Cain Velasdquez would be the only guy that would be considered a ‘super fight.'”
Now, he’s singing a different tune. With Weidman picking up an impressive win against Lyoto Machida during 4t of July weekend, Jones now deems Weidman worthy. In an interview with Sherdog.com, Bones said:
“Oh, man, I think that would be awesome. I would absolutely jump at the opportunity to have a super fight with Chris Weidman. I respect him a lot as a person and as a champion, and I think that that fight would make great sales — absolutely.”
While a Jones vs. Weidman is a fight many fans would gladly throw down $60 for, both men have several obstacles in their way before this hypothetical Champion vs. Champion bout could ever come to fruition. Jones first has to get through Daniel Cormier at UFC 178 next month and then has Alexander Gustafsson waiting in the wings after that, in he’s still the champion by then. Weidman defends his title against Vitor Belfort in December at UFC 181.
