Chris Howie reporting:
MMANews.com had the chance to catch up with Jake Shields this week to discuss his back injury and how his training has been coming along after the injury forced him to drop out of his scheduled Elite XC Welterweight title fight last month against Drew Fickett.
With only a couple days left before the fight Shields had to pull out of what would be the second fight in the last year that was scheduled to be for the EXC strap. At this time he is getting ready to get back to training and get ready for that chance again
“I trained grappling for the first time last night and my back was only a little sore.” Shields stated.
With back injuries it is always better to be safe than sorry and taking it slow is usually the best plan. For Shields getting back into game shape is what matters most now.
“I plan on picking up training in the next week and hopefully it will be back to 100 percent in a week or two” he went on to tell us.
Fickett and Shields will most likely face off for the title in either June or July after Fickett successfully defeated Jae Suk Lim, who filled in for Shields after his scheduled opponent and Shields training partner Nick Diaz was pulled from that March 29th card.
Earlier this week Graciefighter.com reported that Shields had left the Fairtax gym. Shields did make mention of this when he spoke with MMANews.com and did say that he had some big plans in store, news that we will have for you when it is ready to be announced.
