STITCHES AND ALL, MONSON MOVES ONTO GRAPPLING WORLDS
His thirteen minute stand-up war with Pedro Rizzo cost him thirty stitches in his upper lip this past Saturday at the Undisputed Arena Fighting Championships’ “Art of War 3” in Dallas, Texas, but Jeff Monson says he is still en route to the World Wrestling Games in Antalya, Turkey this Saturday to represent the U.S. in grappling.
“I had a plastic surgeon come in and stitch me up real tight. They’re not going to come out. I’ve already been approved to compete Saturday,” says the American Top Team heavyweight. “That’s the only injury I really had. I got knocked up a little bit, but I walked out of the cage just fine.” Monson, 36, says a missing tooth seen being retrieved by a cornerman on the event’s pay-per-view telecast wasn’t his.
The weekend event will mark the first time the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, better known as FILA, has recognized competitive grappling as its own entity. Monson is one of nine champions who qualified for the 2007 USA Wrestling Grappling World Team through trials held earlier this year. The six-time UFC veteran (25-7) will compete in the 125 kg/275 lbs division.
Bodog Fight 135-pound Women’s Champion Tara LaRosa (14-1) will also contend at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
