Impact FC: A New Player In The Promotional Scene?
Posted on Jul 17, 2010
Murilo “Ninja” Rua (brother to UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun“ Rua), Glover Teixeira, and Daniel Acacio will all see main card action as well. But will this intriguing match-making summon forth stronger word of mouth and a significantly larger crowd? Have the Impact FC brass made the required adjustments to put on a more professional show, and draw new fans utilizing proper marketing tools? Another issue that has me a bit concerned is not the lack of Australian fighters featured on the card (there‘s well over a half dozen competing), but the fact that not one single Australia native will fight in a featured clash.

Why not recruit Elvis Sinosic? He’s an Australian native that’s always exciting, has powerful name recognition and could easily make for a great clash with Murilo “Ninja” Rua in one of the events featured bouts.

It comes down to this, creating a hometown cash cow is crucial (take a look at Urijah Faber’s career for a prime example). While the main card is riddled with high caliber opponents, hometown crowds want to see their fighters take the next step up in competition. They want to see if their countryman can exceed expectations and carve a niche in the mainstream world of mixed martial arts. Now, will it hurt not featuring an Australian on the main card? Possibly not; there’s no doubt it could however, potentially help the situation by thrusting one of their own into the spotlight.

The outcome of Impact FC’s second venture into the murky promotional swamps of MMA will depend largely on the fights showcased tonight, and the promotional tools utilized leading up to the event. Impact insiders has ensured major adjustments have been made following their first promotional venture; for the sake of quality mixed martial arts, I certainly hope that to be true.
