MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer MMANEWS.com can confirm that the Thiago Alves vs. Jon Fitch fight scheduled as a welterweight contest at UFC 117 this Saturday night in Oakland will now be fought at a catch-weight. Of course this news comes following Alves' second attempt to make weight after the cameras stopped rolling for the live webcast of the weigh-ins earlier this evening (check out the full UFC 117 Weigh-In Video). Alves weighed in during the live weigh-ins in front of the audience and live on the internet at 171.5 pounds. This is obviously unacceptable, as you're allowed only one pound over the required weight, which at welterweight is 170 pounds. During Alves' second attempt after the internet broadcast, he again weighed in at 171.5 pounds, forcing the fight to either be canceled altogether or switched to an agreed upon "catch-weight," which also means that Alves will be forfeiting 20-percent of his contracted fight purse.
