Five fighters from last Saturday’s UFC 123 event have been issued medical suspensions by the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission.

Mike Lullo, who fought in the preliminaries, lost a brutal fight to rising star Edson Mendes Barboza Jr. when he was leg kicked into submission. George Sotiropoulos on the other hand, opened the pay-par-view event when he clashed with Joe Lauzon in a significant lightweight bout. Unlike Lullo, Sotiropoulos earned a second round victory when he submitted Lauzon with a kimura. Both men have been suspended indefinitely; they now await doctor’s clearance before they’ll be eligible for competition.

Lullo will automatically face a 30 day suspension as a precautionary measure, though he’ll ultimately need medical clearance before he looks to rebound from the loss.

Sotiropoulos faces no mandatory 30 day suspension, and as soon as his eye is ok’d by the doctor, he’ll be good to go. Both Sotiropoulos and Dana White remain confident that the unintentional eye-poke delivered by Lauzon early in the fight will have no long term effect on the lightweight contender. White in fact is so confident in this that he’s (as we previously reported) already delivered Sotiropoulos’s next assignment: Dennis Siver, whom he’ll meet at UFC 127.

Matt Hughes was also suspended for 60 days with a mandatory no contact ruling. Karo Parisyan and T.J. Brian received identical 30 day mandatory no contact suspensions as well. All three rulings are delivered as a precautionary step to ensure each fighter’s safety.
