Gegard Mousasi (31-3-2) was once considered the hottest prospect south of the heavyweight division. The Red Devil product amassed a 15-0 run from November of 2006 to April of 2010, when he was surprisingly outclassed by relative newcomer Muhammed Lawal at Strikeforce: Nashville.

Since the loss Mousasi has compiled 3-0-1 record, and is dedicated to the idea of reclaiming gold within the Strikeforce fold.

Speaking with Sherdog, Mousasi had the following to say regarding his current situation, and a potential leap to the UFC.

“If you’re the Strikeforce champion, then you have a lot more possibilities. I still have a contract with Strikeforce. It makes sense to be a champion there before something like fighting in the UFC can happen. But I don’t know. I’m just focusing on Strikeforce, and eventually it’s not my decision. I just need to keep winning my fights. That’s the most important thing.”

Mousasi has two fights remaining on his Strikeforce contract, and he’s got an idea who he’d like to fight next: the surging Ovince St. Preux.

“I heard he would like to fight me,” stated Mousasi. “I don’t know him. I’ve never seen his fights, but he has done very well with Strikeforce. If Strikeforce decides it’s a good fight and the people want to see it, I’m open to it.”

Mousasi expects to compete under the Strikeforce banner on the upcoming December 17th card, which features a lightweight tilt between champion Gilbert Melendez and rugged contender Jorge Masvidal.
