UFC 14 and 15 Heavyweight Tournament Champion Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr will be in action on July 18th in Edmonton, AB Canada when he takes on up and coming heavyweight Nick Penner at King of the Cage from Rexall Place.
MMANews.com confirmed the bout earlier this evening with King Of The Cage promoter Ken Kupsch.
The 41 year old Kerr has lost his last four fights and nine of eleven dating back to the year 2000. His last bout was in September of 2008. Kerr burst on the MMA scene in 1997, winning three straight one night tournaments before heading to Japan to fight for the Pride organization. He was the subject of a great 2003 HBO documentary that chronicled his addiction to pain killers as well as the Pride 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix.
Penner, who holds an 8-1 record, is riding a five fight win streak coming into the bout. He will be the home town boy when he looks to extend the streak to six.
It will be a classic striker vs. wrestler match up as Penner holds an extensive boxing and kickboxing background while Kerr is an excellent wrestler and is one of the first MMA fighters to utilize the ground and pound attack effectively in the early days of the sport.
Kupsch also confirmed to MMANews.com that he has more big fights planned for July card and that he is now putting together another big main event for the card that he may be able to announce this week.
